So Long, Einstein

If this continues, I'm going to have to start a new blog just to cover the daily going-ons of the bicycle repair shop formerly known as the beloved East Village Bikes!

I was walking down Avenue C yesterday evening, when I noticed that the Einstein banners that covered the windows had been replaced with pictures torn out of Maxim!

Behold:

It looks like a real repair shop now, without the calendars!

East Village Bikes Again

There's just no telling any more what's going on at the perhaps formerly-beloved, perhaps beloved, East Village Bikes on Avenue C!

Are they open? Are they closed? Are they… unclosed?

One thing for certain is that there was a lot of activity in August!

This is from August 10th — lots of bicycles outside!

"Don't steal my soul!"

By August 14th, the bicycles were gone and these window guards had taken their place:

Window guards.

By the 24th, the bicycles were back outside again!

Back outside again.

Maybe it's a squatter operation? How East Villagey!

Untimely Sign

I passed by the formerly-beloved East Village Bikes about three days ago, after having passed by it four days ago, and saw this sign taped up onto the door, beneath the riot gates:

Taped-up sign.

I have the feeling that this is an old sign — nobody poses with The Shadow any more!

But why post it now?

Activity At East Village Bikes

I guess the riot gates being raised at the formerly beloved East Village Bikes on Avenue C was not just a fluke — they were up again this past Sunday!

It's still hard to tell what's going on, except that they're selling paintings and used air conditioners:

…and Elmo is guarding the cellar doors:

This time, the door was open:

Here is a close-up of the inside:

It's a mystery!

East Village Bikes Closed

This has to be one for the record books!

The beloved East Village Bikes, on Avenue C, opened in early May. Here it is late June, and they're closed!

Behold:

Even the name is covered.

Even the name is covered!

You can tell this is the real thing, because the bikes, that were on the sidewalk since the day they opened, are now gone:

Gone.

This leave us asking a lot of questions, like:

What will become of the WFMU-bicycle-basket bicycle?!

WFMU Bicycle Basket Update

How often does it happen that a bicycle basket makes an appearance in a blog more than once?

Not very often, I'd wager, unless it's the WFMU bicycle basket of yore!

Take a look at this, seen outside the beloved East Village Bikes, on Avenue C:

WFMU bicycle basket.

There was a repair ticket on the seat — I wonder what's wrong with the bike?

Too much static?!

Sidewalk Appropriation

The beloved Recycle-A-Bicycle, on Avenue C above East 5th Street, never used sidewalk space to store their wares.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the beloved East Village Bikes, as seen (again) this past Saturday afternoon:

The same cannot be said.

East Village businesses love sidewalk appropriation!

Bikes On The Sidewalk, By George

Just the other day, East Villagers were celebrating the arrival of the newly-beloved East Village Bikes, on Avenue C — complete with dog mascot!

It didn't take long for them to fill up the sidewalk with their inventory:

Check it out — a Big Wheel!

East Village Bikes, by George

Here's another one for the "Don't blink or you'll miss it" file!

I was walking down Avenue C — oh, back on April 12 — when I saw that the beloved Recycle-A-Bicycle was gone!

Recycle-A-Bicycle — gone.

I checked out the sign in the window (with the groovy leopard-skin tape!):

Groovy leopard-skin tape.

They weren't kidding when they said it was coming soon. I passed by there again this past Sunday, and the new, beloved East Village Bikes was open, and they have a dog!

Official dog of East Village Bikes.

There's a sign in window that says they accept donations:

You could give them some money, I suppose, but me: I'm going to give them dog treats!
