East Village Today Reboot

The East Village Today blog began in 2014 as an effort to promote awareness of East Village coolness today, as opposed to the bad old days of the 80s and 90s. It was highly successful, but that was seven years ago! So much has changed in that time.

Probably the most important change is that some fucking Ukrainian stole my domain name! OK, I wasn't keeping up with my email, so I missed the repeated warnings from Go Daddy that my domain name was about to expire, but that doesn't mean it's OK to take it.

Look at this:

The Ukraine.

This is where my domain name resides now! It's so far away, the East Village isn't even on the map!

Happy Anniversary!

Today marks the third anniversary of East Village Today!

Who would have thought that a blog with such humble beginnings would grow to become so wildly popular?!

I have only you, my many faithful readers, to thank.

Thanks!

Neighborhood Square

It's unlikely many East Villagers know this, but back in late March of 2015, DNAInfo switched from using Disqus for their comments section, to Neighborhood Square.

One of the benefits of Neighborhood Square is that it allows you to follow specific neighborhoods and post your own stories. Naturally, I started posting stories from East Village Today in the East Village neighborhood. At the time, I was the only one doing so, apart from the people at DNAInfo.

Fast forward to last week. I posted a couple of stories, and later I noticed they were gone. At first, I thought it was a server glitch on their side, so I waited until the following morning to see if the stories reappeared. They hadn't, so I reposted them.

Then, on Monday, the same thing happened: two of my stories disappeared. Again, I waited a day and reposted — this time they disappeared again!

I wrote to the people at Neighborhood Square:

My comment.

Their reply.

"Posts from neighbors," as if East Village Today is not a neighbor!

I wrote back:

My (abridged) response.

Their reply again.

I think Donna (The D in DNAInfo) thought I was concerned with my stories not being in their newsletter. The funny thing is, I didn't know they weren't in the newsletter — I don't subscribe to it!

So, this is how it stands. I, East Village Today, who brought Neighborhood Square to life with my postings, am now subject to arbitrary deletions.

I never suspected, when I started this blog almost three years ago, the antipathy that exists to the promotion of East Village coolness!

Something Wonky This Way Goes

Something is wonky with Blogger!

This is what my most recent post looks like:

Wonky blog.

The really weird thing is, when I preview this post, it looks like it's supposed to — like this:

Wonky blog preview.

I hope the Blogger people fix this fast!

Free Advertising!

East Villagers may be surprised to learn this, but there are other East Village blogs besides this one!

It's rare that one blog mentions another (professional jealousy?), but today it happened: one of them allowed the mention of East Village Today in a comment!

It had to have been a difficult decision to approve this comment: on the one hand, it was by a petulant regular and maligned East Village Today;
at the same time, mentioning East Village Today by name was violating the shun!

She misspelled "supercilious", but that's not important — as they say in the PR business: There's no such thing as bad publicity!

COOL-OOOO

Sometimes, East Villagers are so busy doing one cool thing, that they don't have time for other cool things, like keeping up with their blog, for instance!

Such is the case with East Village Today. I can't say I was doing something cooler than this blog — in the East Village, there are no degrees of coolness: there is cool, and there is the abyss!

Fortunately, I took some pictures during this period of awayness, to help keep people grounded:

Co…

You know what's coming next, don't you?!

OL…OOOO

Woah, what's that? Cool…oooo?

The East Village is cool-oooo!

Don't Pay the Ransom – I Escaped!

East Villagers have been asking: Where's East Village Today?

Where's East Village Today?

The truth is, two things happened that resulted in my not being able to take pictures: 1) the end of Daylight Savings Time means that it's dark when I get out of work, and my video camera does not take great pictures at night; and 2) my morning routine has changed — I am no longer able to take pictures on my way to work!

A momentary setback, you can be sure — soon enough I'll be back to shooting on weekdays!

At least I wasn't kidnapped!

Now With More Video!

It's possible that at one time or another, I mentioned that the camera I used for East Village Today did not belong to me. Well, the time finally came when the owner requested the camera back.

I have another, that's not as good, but will certainly suffice, and another still that's much better, but is missing the battery charger.

So until I buy a new battery charger, I'm thinking that I will switch to — hold onto your hats!… video!

Won't that be cool?! Instead of static images of the East Village, you can view animated images!

So stay tuned!

In the meantime, here's a picture of a shed in Tompkins Square Park:
