Mixed-Messages Memorial

I took this picture inside Tompkins Square Park at the beginning of the month. It's some kind of memorial to Oi! Oi!

Oi! Oi! memorial.

It says R.I.P. and S.O.S. I'm not sure what that means.

Hassan Memorial

I was walking down Avenue C this past Sunday, when I saw this makeshift memorial in front of the beloved Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space:

Makeshift memorial.

I didn't know who it was for, but when I saw this sign on the door leading into the beloved C-Squat, I knew I would soon find out.

C-Squat.

It was for Hassan, aka Jerrold Heiserman:

Don't shoot!

A close-up shows the inside of one of the squat rooms:

Inside a squat room.

It's not at all what I would expect a squat room to look like! Where are the bottle caps? Where are the nodded-out punks? And check out that office-style drop ceiling.

It's like the television commercial; It's not your father's squat room!

Makeshift Memorial

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park recently, when I saw this makeshift hanging on a fence behind some benches:

Here is a close-up:

It looks some kind of Italian renaissance painter, or something!

An Aside

As an aside, do you know what an East Village blogger does more than anything else?

If your answer is "Wait", you're right!

When preparing the post "In Memory Of…", I had to wait for almost a whole minute for this burnt-sienna-haired woman to stop fiddling with her phone and move away from the memorial!

Fiddling.

Well, if it was easy, everyone would do it!

Here is a swatch of the color Burnt Sienna:

In Memory Of…

I was walking across East 2nd Street back on April 4, when I saw this new artsy project on the side of a building near First Avenue:

Artsy project.

Here is a close-up:

"In Memory Of…"? It makes me think this is an epitaph, and not the right time to point out that this should read: Your Light Shone Brightly.

I Googled "Narcossist" and found a web site and Instagram account, but nothing referring to a death.

I'll keep you posted!

Ian Jones Memorials

Back in September, I posted a story about a memorial at the Avenue A and East 9th Street entrance to Tompkins Square Park, dedicated to someone who went by the name Lower East Side Jewels.

That same day, further down the 9th Street corridor through the park, was this memorial photograph:

Memorial photograph.

I'm surprised to see these photographs still being placed around the park. Some of you may remember these earlier memorials, from this past August:

From dangerous sociopaths to promising young models, East Villagers love their memorials!

L.E.S. Jewels R.I.P.

I was walking by Tompkins Square Park this past Saturday, when I saw this, at the entrance of Avenue A and East 9th Street:

L.E.S. Jewels R.I.P.

Lower East Side Jewels was notorious for drinking, taking drugs, and fighting. When he died, one person commented on another blog:
Surprised to hear about LES Jewels. Never said a word to him but liked how he never said a word to me either.
From there to here, from here to there, memorials are everywhere… in the East Village Today!

Memorial for Rosie of East 7th Street

I was walking across East 7th Street yesterday, when I saw this memorial for a woman named Rosie:

Memorial for Rosie on East 7th Street.

Memorials for someone who's died are sad enough in themselves, but this was sadder because of the notes left by a young child.

RIP Rosie of East 7th Street.
