Art Imitates East Village Today

People sometimes ask me, they say: Hey East Village Today, is your photo blog really influential?

To which I can only reply with a resounding: Yes!

Here is an example of recent posters, on Avenue A, using photography that mimics my phone camera:

Blurry photos.

In case you're thinking that the posters are actually in focus, take a look at the graffiti and the Krypton poster.

A Photographic Journey

If there's one thing East Villagers are known for (and there are many!) it's beloving our local businesses — and taking pictures of them!

So what could be better than hanging these pictures in an art gallery and letting people look at them? (I mean… OK… a blog…)

That's exactly what the beloved ILevel Gallery is doing! (Get it? ILevel? Like eye level, because the pictures are hung at eye level? But also like iPhone, because a lot of pictures are taken with iPhones? Pretty clever, eh?)

And the opening reception is tonight!

Here is the information, in the form of a screen shot taken from their web site:

Screen shot.

I know what you're thinking: Will any pictures from East Village Today be in this exhibition?

No.

It's OK though — truth be told, I haven't posted any of their pictures either!

A splendid time is guaranteed* for all!

*Not a guarantee.

Back to the Street

I was walking across St. Mark's Place yesterday afternoon, when I saw this beautiful work of art:

Beautiful work of art.

If you are familiar with the East Village, you probably think that I'm referring to the trash and graffiti, but… no, no, no!

I am referring to this:

This.

Look back at the first picture, it's just to the left of ATM.

This is part of a series of photographs called Back To The Street.

Keep an eye out when you're walking around the East Village — you might find some yourself!

Public Art Exhibition

East Villagers are accustomed to seeing art in public, from murals to sculptures to mosaics to performances — art is everywhere!

Usually the materials are low-cost, however — spray paint, found objects, broken bottles…

It's less common for someone to pay a photographer and models and have the works printed larger than life, but that's exactly what happened at the new building going up on Avenue A, called 100 Avenue A.

Here are samples of the photo banners:

There is an Instagram page that shows the people involved:

Congratulations to young, East Village artists, on a job well done!
