Meme Mods

East Villagers love it when their favorite graffitiers exhibit their memes in unconventional fashion — it keeps them from getting stale!

One such example occurred over the recent Independence Day weekend, when the Missing Foundation meme was displayed in duct tape fashion on Avenue A:

Duct tape fashion.

What is that, a quarter?

Nope.

Rats!

Another variation is the red-on-black sticker:

Stickers are cheap, and easy to put up. Also, they don't destroy someone else's efforts to find work!

Reborn Again

I was walking up Avenue A this past Friday morning, when I saw the now-familiar Painting/Floor-Sanding sign, somewhat altered:

Somewhat altered.

I took a picture of it and added it to my Snapchat story with the caption: The meme that would not die is reborn.

I continued on my way, but then that evening, while walking down Avenue C, I saw an amazing preponderance of the very same signs, with the very same meme:

Same sign, same meme.

Another.

Yet another.

Which is why I find it strange that this sign looks the way it does:

Strange.

Is it some kind of a mistake?

Smiley Faces

Back in the middle of December, I posted pictures of an old meme, updated for the 21st century!

Today, when I was walking up Avenue B, I saw not only more of these memes graffitied onto lampposts and newspaper boxes, but the modification as well:

Icon and modification.

The Party's Just Beginning

Back in early November, I wrote about how East Villagers like to reminisce about the bad old days.

Today, while walking up Avenue B, I passed by another El Especialito paper box graffitied with the same meme, this time updated for the 21st century:

Updated for the 21st century.

In case you can't see the modification, here's a close-up:

Reminiscing

East Villagers love to speed headlong into the future, but sometimes they like to stop and reminisce.

That seems to be happening more frequently for one person, who has taken to scrawling 30-year-old slogans on lampposts and newspaper boxes:

…and hanging up signs that used to be hung up in the mid-1980s, like these that I saw this morning, on Avenue C and East 5th Street:

Mid-1980s signs.

Here is a horizontal close-up:

If you're wondering, it's no easier to read in person!

Here's a vertical close-up:

The signs and the inverted martini glass with the line through the spilling contents were those of a band called Missing Foundation. You can find their songs on YouTube!

East Villagers know that change is cyclical — these cycles do not come back exactly to where they started; they don't make a perfect circle. Instead, change is evolutionary, moving in a spiral. Which is to say that it is not 1985 any more, and no one will respond to calls to mug yuppies, or not act "civilized".

But there's always reminiscing!
