Everywhere you go in the East Village these days, you'll be caught up in World Cup Mania!

Here at the beloved Zum Schneider, on the corner of Avenue C and East 7th Street, it was standing room only for the game:

Avenue A vs. Avenue C

On average, the East Village is very cool. Very cool!

But an average express the central or typical value in a set of data — degrees of coolness, in this case — and is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number. In layman's terms it means some places in the East Village are cooler than others!

While taking pictures of the young'uns trick-or-treating along the mid-Avenue A corridor, I discovered that range of lesser-coolness! It is with no joy that I must report this to you.

The un-beloved Black Rose:

Luster Photo & Digital Lab was dangerously close to being un-beloved — when I passed by, a young'un came out saying "Another fortune cookie!"

To their credit, the beloved Ray's Candy Store not only did not decorate their front (thereby maintaining an already-scary appearance!), but delivered candy to the young'uns:

On Avenue C, however, restaurant and bar owners dressed up and went outside to greet the revellers!

Yes, Avenue C is cooler than Avenue A, within the spectrum of extreme coolness that is… the East Village Today!

It's All Over For Another Year

Riding my Citibike up the East River Monday? Tuesday? I passed by the tent where East Village bar Zum Schneider had their Oktoberfest celebration this year. It was up for about ten days, but now it's coming down:

Oktoberfest Has Started!

Do you want to know what's great about Citibikes? It doesn't matter where you are (inside the area serviced), if you need a bike to go somewhere, there's one close by!

Today I passed by Zum Schneider and remembered their tent up on the East River. If I had to go back home to get my bike, I would not have gone up. As it was, I was a block away from a station. I simply got on a bike and rode up!

The tent was large enough to hold hundreds of revellers!

What Oktoberfest would be complete without an oom-pah-pah band?!

A great time was being had by all! It really made me wish I drank beer! Next week I'm going to go up and have a pretzel and a bratwurst!

Oktoberfest on the East River

This isn't technically the East Village, but since I mentioned Zum Schneider recently, I think it fits.

Guess who's having an Oktoberfest celebration in a tent on the East River?

Can you believe it?! How great is that?!

I saw this as I rode my Citibike up the river to work on Friday:

It's just past the end of Avenue C, on the other side of the FDR (naturally!)

Do you know what "Wiesn" means? It means "Oktoberfest"! Who knew?!

And this just gets better. Take a look at what else will be there!

If you're like me, you're probably wondering what's on the other side of the tent. Well, this is:

So revellers will be able to see the river, but won't be able to fall in! And that's good, because people at Oktoberfest parties have been known to get a bit tipsy!

Oktoberfest

Zum Schneider is a German bar on Avenue C and East 7th Street. Their food is great and their beers are large!

A friend of mine, born and raised in Berlin, but living in the East Village at the time, told me that Zum Schneider did more to promote German culture in New York than the Goethe House. That's some statement!

I passed by there last Sunday, after spending the day in Tompkins Square Park. The crowd outside was already preparing for Oktoberfest.
