Christmassy Standpipe

Bless me, readers, for I have sinned — it's been ten days since my last post!

Well, you know, East Villagers get all caught up in the Christmas thing.

Speaking of Christmas, check out this Christmassy standpipe, that I saw on one of my jaunts into the Lower East Side:

Christmassy standpipe.

Notice the way the sidewalk slants. That's something they have down there in the Lower East Side: slanty sidewalks.

Weird!

Low Tech

As part of my series of Day Trips Outside the East Village, I ventured into the Lower East Side this past Saturday. Walking up Forsythe Street, I passed by the Mulherin art gallery.

The pictures near the window caught my eye. They were photographs of houses — nothing special, just drab houses. They looked exactly like the kind of pictures I take, so I stopped in!

It turns out they weren't photographs at all, but paintings! The show is called Low Tech, and the artist is Mike Bayne, from Canada!

As much as I liked the houses, this is the one I took a picture of:

The Enfield.

What I like most about this is the half-a-sign on the left. This is the kind of thing that drives me crazy when cropping photos: do I extend the frame to the left to bring in the rest of the sign, and shift the center leftwards, or do I Photoshop it out? In this case, I would Photoshop it out, but he left it in! Incredible!

East Villagers who appreciate the unadulterated mundane should make this day-trip to the Lower East Side! Here is a map showing how to get there from the East Village:

Directions from East Village.

The show will remain open until October 9!

Jodo Bee Mural

Last night after work, I took a trip outside the East Village, to the Lower East Side!* I had been invited through Instagram to see the new mural by the illustrious JodoNYC!

It's not easy finding one's way around outside the East Village, but after putting my sleuthing skills to work I eventually found the beloved Stanton Social. I asked the greeter inside if she knew where the bee was, and she showed me — and now I will show you:

Giant Jodo Bee.

They grow so quickly — I remember when this bee was knee-high to a grasshopper!

______
* This is in an area known as Hello Square — people here are so friendly, they welcome you with a resounding Hello!

Pickle On A Stick

Can't get enough of that pickle on a stick!

These are some more shots of people eating pickles on a stick, at the Lower East Side Pickle Day celebration:

What's this?

Eating corn.

Corn?!

Maybe she's from Brooklyn!

Pickle Day

Yesterday was Pickle Day! It wasn't in the East Village though, it was in the Lower East Side, on Orchard Street, right across Houston Street from the East Village. Yours truly was there with my camera.

Some of the pickle events were very popular, and the lines were long:

More long lines.

There were pickles of all varieties: deep-fried pickles, pickles on a stick, pickles on a toothpick, and pickled cabbage.

Even pickled cabbage!

Of course, Pickle Day would not be complete without a visit from Mr. Pickle!

Being with the press, I was afforded a view behind the scenes:

Even celebrities were drawn to the event:

Moby!

There was even a ten-year-old DJ, playing dance music for the younger crowd:

It was fun for the whole family!

NSFW

There's a part of New York City that's maybe even crazier than the East Village (though not nearly as cool!). It's called the Lower East Side. It doesn't even have a real name, like East Village, or Soho, it's just called by where it is in relation to other parts of the city: lower east side.

Anyway, walking up Eldridge Street today, I spotted this in the distance. I knew right away that it was Spiderman, since he wasn't just a silhouette like in this picture, but I couldn't tell what else was hanging up there…

Spiderman hanging from a wire.

…until I got closer:

No sex please, we're British!
