Christmassy Standpipe

Bless me, readers, for I have sinned — it's been ten days since my last post!

Well, you know, East Villagers get all caught up in the Christmas thing.

Speaking of Christmas, check out this Christmassy standpipe, that I saw on one of my jaunts into the Lower East Side:

Christmassy standpipe.

Notice the way the sidewalk slants. That's something they have down there in the Lower East Side: slanty sidewalks.

Weird!

Festive Scaffolding

Christmas is just a few months away, and the beloved Exit9 Gift Emporium on Avenue A is already decorating!

Behold:

Decorating for Christmas.

Either that or something else!

One thing is certain: their scaffolding sure is festive!

The Lone Ornament

Sometimes, all you need is one item to make a costume, or decorated tree!

Just like a single, red nose constitutes a legitimate Halloween costume, a single, hanging pinecone constitutes a legitimate Christmas decoration, like this one that I saw on East 6th Street:

Legitimate Christmas decoration.

Here is a vertical close-up:

"A" Christmas Stencil

I was walking past the beloved Vazac's bar on the corner of Avenue B and East 7th Street recently, when I saw their Christmas window stencils:

Christmas window stencils.

Vazac's is known for their stencils, which are defaced almost immediately by their customers, who write their names or clever slogans in the Ice Crystals Aerosol Spray!

They won't be able to deface that "A" rating though!

It's comforting to know that the bags of pretzels you can buy at the bar are kept at the right temperature!

The Christmas Garden

There is a line in a song by Elvis Costello that goes: "[I]t is always Christmas in a cupboard at the top of the stairs."

On East 6th Street, it is always Christmas in a community garden called Creative Little Garden:

The Christmas garden.

Here are two close-ups:

All they need now are presents under the trees!

Festive Garbage

East Villagers love to decorate for holidays: Christmas, naturally, but also Halloween, and even Valentine's Day!

But East Villagers don't need a holiday to decorate! I was walking across East 7th Street when I saw this:

Potted tree festooned with gold garland.

When does a potted tree festooned with gold garland not look good, I ask you?!

Garbage doesn't have to look garbagey… in the East Village Today!

The 39th Day of Christmas

If the Days of Christmas were greater than 12, this past Sunday, when I took this picture, would have been the 39th day!

Everybody sing!

On the 39th day of Christmas
my true love gave to me
an or-nament hanging in a treeeee!

Or-nament hanging in a treeeee!

Oh yes, this was on East 3rd Street.

Didn't I tell you East Villagers love Christmas?!

Where Christmas Never Ends

It's hard saying goodbye to Christmas. There won't be another holiday where you decorate until Halloween! Even I still have my Christmas lights in the window!

Here are a couple of pictures from around the East Village, where the decorations are still up:

Festive guitar at TR Crandall on East 3rd Street.

Star and lights at Smooth Skin Factory on East 7th Street..

It's beginning to look a lot like next Christmas… in the East Village!

Festive Scaffolding Again

I was walking across East 7th Street the other night, when I saw this:

Alternative uses for scaffolding.

This scaffolding was also decorated for Halloween!

I said it once and I'll say it again: East Villagers love Christmas!

More Christmasy Stuff

East Villagers love Christmas, from decorations to SantaCon, it's all one big festive party during December!

These are some pictures I took yesterday:

From Halloween lights to Christmas lights!

Whether traditional or unusual, the East Village always shows its festive spirit at Christmastime!
