Another Senseless Baby Bird Death

Unfortunately, not everything that happens in the East Village is happy happy joy joy.

Following the death of the beloved Hawky in August, came this senseless baby bird death, on East 6th Street:

Senseless bird death.

One East Villager wrote:
This beautiful young soul will never sore high up in the clouds bringing the caring people joy and happiness of watching his magnificence. He never got the chance to live his life. Instead he suffered a horrible death.
East Villagers truly are emotional people!

New News?

Recently, I walked past the beloved The Stand on Avenue C and East 6th Street, and I noticed something I hadn't seen before: The New News.

Do you see it?

It's at the top.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

It's the same as a gift I received recently:

New Nooz.

Of course, nothing surpasses Noo-Noos when it comes to tidying up:

In many ways, life in the East Village is very much like life in Tubbyland!

Sewer Art

Sometimes when you're walking around the East Village, you see things and you think: I wonder how that happened?!

This sewer grate, at the corner of First Avenue and East 6th Street, is one of those things.

One of those things.

To the untrained eye, it looks like two separate spillages, but if you pay close attention you will see that both the puke and the paint are the same distance from the top corners of the sewer grate, and cover the same area.

This is an art project if ever there was one!

Proper Trees

Finally, someone understands how trees should be in the East Village!

Behold, properly arranged and displayed trees, on East 6th Street:

Properly arranged and displayed.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

Earlier, I had the idea that all the trees should be cut down and replaced with artificial trees. Another good idea would be if they were all replaced with the same type of trees, like these birch trees.

Can you imagine how cool that would look?!

Doorway to Hell?

I was walking across East 6th Street a couple of weeks ago, when I saw what, at first glance, appeared to be an abandoned fire door:

Abandoned fire door.

What if this is a doorway to Hell, I wondered?

Then I remembered: The East Village is built on a swamp — it's more likely a doorway to… the swamp!

First Crusties of Spring — 2018

It's that time of the year again — it's time for the return of the crusties!

I saw these crusties on St. Mark's Place last night, outside the formerly-beloved JAS Mart:

Crusties last night.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

It looks like they changed their uniform color!

Not to be outdone, here is the first robin of Spring, on East 6th Street this morning:

First robin.

Here is a close-up:

His uniform color hasn't changed.

Widened Tree Bed

Speaking of widened tree beds, here is another, also on East 6th Street:

Another widened tree bed.

It looks like the City went around widening tree beds in the East Village, and while some East 6th Streeters couldn't be bothered with altering or replacing their tree guard, others could.

In their own way.

The Evolving Tree Bed

Back in March, I was walking across East 6th Street, when I saw this groovy tree bed:

Groovy tree bed.

What makes it so groovy, you ask?

It's the chain holding the birdbath in place:

Holding the birdbath.

Three days ago, I passed it again and noticed the bricks surrounding it. I wasn't sure if they were there last month, so I took another picture:

Another picture.

It turns out they were, but…

…and this is truly amazing: I took this picture exactly a year ago, to the day, of the same tree bed:

Same tree bed.

It's still surrounded by bricks, but it is different — it's narrower!

And less cluttered.

Celebrity Bird House

I was walking across East 6th Street this past Saturday, when I saw this beautiful bird house hanging from a tree outside the very groovy Earth School:

Beautiful bird house.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

Wait a minute — what's that?!

Taylor Swift.

East Villagers are honored — honored, I say! — to display this beautiful bird house, built by none other than the official musician of the East Village: Taylor Swift.

Nice Pipe

There's nothing special about this black pipe, on East 6th Street:

Nothing special.

I just like it!

A Blue Door

You don't see too many blue doors in the East Village, especially of the wooden variety.

Here is one on East 6th Street:

Blue door.

They were smart to put a gate around it — no one wants someone walking right up to their front door!

Free Dishes

I was walking across East 6th Street this past Tuesday, when I saw these dishes abandoned on these decrepit steps:

Decrepit steps.

Someone could have tripped over these, if the bricks gave way and sent them stumbling in that direction!

Let's take a closer look at these dishes, shall we?

A closer look.

If you are in need of three mis-matching plates, they might still be there!

Bacon Cheeseburger On The Ground

Who does this? Who buys a bacon cheeseburger with side salads, eats the salads, then throws the bacon cheeseburger on the ground?

Thrown on the ground.

Someone who lives on East 6th Street, that who!

Here is a close-up of the calamity:

Calamity.

Unless it's a vegan bacon cheeseburger, in which case, why not throw it on the ground?

One Step Forward

Back in August, I proposed that we remove the trees in the East Village and replace them with artificial trees.

Slowly, movement is being made in that direction, as you can see from this specimen on East 6th Street:

Branchless tree trunk.

It's quite beautiful, actually.

Conserving Labor

Everyone knows trees need water, even during the Winter.

But when the snow melts, most of it drains away into the sewers, and people have to water the trees themselves!

One enterprising East Villager, on East 6th Street, found a way around this by shoveling snow into the tree bed:

Into the tree bed.

This way, when the snow melts, it will water the tree, and s/he won't have to!

Impending Sidewalk Collapse

I was walking across East 6th Street last week, when I saw this new hole in the sidewalk in front of the apartment building between the Church Of God and the 6BC Botanical Garden:

New hole.

What does it look like inside, you ask? What is it people are going to fall into when the collapse occurs?

Dark.

It's dark as a dungeon, down in that hole!

It's grainy too.

A Real Find

The strange thing about this abandoned television set on East 6th Street is not that it was abandoned, but that someone still used it before abandoning it.

Ancient television set.

No doubt, some very old freegan will consider this a real find.

No… Anything

Remember the beloved Bakeri, on East 6th Street, with the outdoor table for one on top of cellar doors?

Here is a reminder:

A reminder.

I passed by their last night and the place was empty.

Maybe this is why:

No wifi.

No wifi? There might as well be no electricity!

Hoarding

Long, long ago, when East Village Today was in its infancy, I posted a picture of a hidden sinkhole on the corner of Avenue C and East 6th Street.

This morning, I took a look through the Avenue-C-side holes in the construction fence that surrounds the place, and saw this:

Right hole.

Left hole.

It looks like some kind of hoarder lives here!

Great Job

I was walking down East 6th Street last night, when I saw up ahead of me a sign for the beloved Zen Yai.

Great Pho Shop job, I thought to myself:

Great Pho Shop job.

Right?!

Continuing on my way, I passed by the beloved Ace of Cuts:

Ace of Cuts.

Great Barber Shop job, I thought to myself!
