I was walking past this assortment of garbage on East 4th Street this past Thursday, when something jumped out at me:

No, it wasn't a rat! It was this:

Book and bus transfer.

$25?! Who would pay $25 for this? The price in about 1963 was $3.95.

What's funny is that the inscription is just a repeat of the copyright page.

Free Dishes

I was walking across East 6th Street this past Tuesday, when I saw these dishes abandoned on these decrepit steps:

Someone could have tripped over these, if the bricks gave way and sent them stumbling in that direction!

Too Much

You have to wonder what East Villagers are thinking when they open an individual portion of food, like apple sauce.

Do they think, when they open it, it'll be too much to eat in a single sitting? You might think so!

Behold, as seen on East 7th Street:

"I'm full!"

Maybe the solution to this is smaller portions, like spoonfuls?

The extra packaging is a small price to pay for a reduction in food wastage!

Recycling

East Villagers love to recycle.

Everyone knows that when you recycle, you have to separate items of one type from items of another — that includes separating green wood chips from brown, as seen this morning in Tompkins Square Park:

Lost Shadow

Speaking of The Shadow, I was walking across St. Mark's Place yesterday afternoon, when I saw what I thought was a copy of "New York's only underground newspaper" lying on the sidewalk.

"Woo hoo!" I thought, "a free The Shadow!"

It turned out to be only the cover though. I picked it up off the sidewalk and put it beside these recycling cans:

Some anarchist was surely disappointed when he got back to his squat, to find he was missing four pages of his underground newspaper. He probably had to go back out and steal another copy!

Three Cans… Revisited

One month and four days ago, I took a picture of shiny, new recycling and trash cans on the corner of Second Avenue and East 11th Street.

Recycling Poetry

I was walking across (you guessed it!) St. Mark's Place one recent Saturday morning, when I saw this lone book on the stairs of a building:

On closer inspection, it turned out to be an uncorrected proof of Kenneth Koch's finest collection of poems: New Addresses:

East Village Today leaves things as they're found, but not everyone does. When I passed by again later that morning, the uncorrected proof was gone!

Three Cans and a Graffiti

I was riding my Citibike down Second Avenue yesterday when, as all law-abiding East Villagers do, I stopped at the red light.

While waiting for the light to turn green, I noticed an array of multi-colored receptacles beside me, leading to the very groovy skeleton head we've all come to love:

Recycling Christmas Trees

East Villagers love to recycle — they cycle, and they recycle!

Christmas trees are no exception, as seen yesterday at the Treecycle station in Tompkins Square Park:

Christmas Treecycling Comes Early

East Villagers all know the area in Tompkins Square Park where Christmas trees are taken to be mulched. It's almost as festive a ritual as buying the tree — helping it to rejoin the circle of life!

Here is a picture from this past January:

This year, however, the Parks Department has erected the fence early — fine months early, to be precise! This picture is from last week:

Last week, the Terrahawk Mobile Utility Surveillance Tower was parked here. It's gone now, but they left the fence.

Recycling Food

A couple of days ago, I passed by this table on East 1st Street just in from First Avenue:

East Villagers love to recycle! They'll recycle anything: pineapples, apple cores, pears, bagels, banana peels, used tea bags, carrot tops, egg shells, half-eaten pretzels, croissants, orange peels… you name it!

You're probably wondering what these food scraps must look like, so I took a picture:

It might not seem conducive to recycling, putting recyclable food into plastic bags, but how else are you going to get it to the recycling table?

Now that I know this is here, I'm going to do my part and start recycling my food scraps. I have a couple of pork chop bones I'm going to take over today!

Before Recycling Comes Reusing

Whenever East Villagers have no further use for some item, instead of just throwing it into a trashcan, they like to put it out on the street for someone else to take.

This morning, while walking across St. Mark's place, I saw this umbrella, left for someone who needs it:

As it turns out, I had both an umbrella and a pair of shoes with me, so I left them both for someone else.

Relaxing

Doing everything there is to do on a Sunday in the East Village is not easy! People get tired, and so do their feet. Sometimes you just have to take off your shoes and rest, like this guy:
