I was walking past this assortment of garbage on East 4th Street this past Thursday, when something jumped out at me:

No, it wasn't a rat! It was this:

Book and bus transfer.

$25?! Who would pay $25 for this? The price in about 1963 was $3.95.

What's funny is that the inscription is just a repeat of the copyright page.

Sentimental, indeed!

Doors On Doors

You see lots of stuff on top of cellar doors when you're walking around the East Village — usually people eating.

I don't think I've ever seen garbage piled on them though… until now!

Garbage Blockade

I was walking down East 7th Street last week, as East Villagers everywhere were preparing for the great Blizzard Stella.

I'm not sure how blocking the sidewalk with garbage was supposed to help, but here it was, larger than life:

Teeny Tiny Dumpster

I was walking across East 4th Street recently, seeing if there was any activity in the dumping ground that has formed outside the beloved El Jardin del Paraiso, when I saw… a teeny tiny dumpster!

It's so cute! It's like a tiny little baby dumpster, for tiny little baby garbage!

Maybe if someone hangs a No Dumping sign on the side of it, people will start putting their trash there, instead of on the sidewalk!

Sidewalk Tire Disposal

Recently, there's been a rash of sidewalk tire disposals in the East Village. This one is on First Avenue, taken two weeks ago:

Ownership of the 4th Street tire has already been claimed by at least two dogs!

Don't be surprised to see these tires appear in some future sculpture… in the East Village Today!

Festive Garbage

East Villagers love to decorate for holidays: Christmas, naturally, but also Halloween, and even Valentine's Day!

But East Villagers don't need a holiday to decorate! I was walking across East 7th Street when I saw this:

When does a potted tree festooned with gold garland not look good, I ask you?!

Garbage doesn't have to look garbagey… in the East Village Today!

Some Pictures Just Frame Themselves

I was walking across St. Mark's Place (?) this past Saturday when I saw this neatly stacked and organized collection of refuse on the sidewalk:

Garbage Protection

East Villagers take garbage theft seriously. At this building on St. Mark's Place, they've gone to great lengths to protect their garbage:

Even the recycling is protected:

In case you can't figure out what I'm talking about, take a closer look.

I had the idea that maybe these were just decoys, meant only to deter theft, but those three holes drilled on the right side indicate that they're real. The superintendent drilled the holes there first, only to discover that the device needed to be on the left side. (This shot is from the garbage bin, not the recycling bin.)
