Moped Tires — Update

Do you remember the story about the abandoned tires on East 4th Street, back in January? Here's a link, if you need to refresh your memory.

Well, here we are a few short weeks later, and the number of abandoned tires has doubled:

In case you think I'm making this up, that I moved the tires myself, just to create controversy, here is another picture showing all the tires:

Tireless Update

East Village Today is happy to report that the tireless bicycle seen this past Friday on East 4th Street is now tireful again:

Once they get some pedals in place (and a bell), this bicycle will be certifiably road-ready!

Tireless

East Village bicyclists are tireless — both in their bicycling activities as well as their advocacy of the bicycling lifestyle!

Sometimes, it's the bicycles themselves that are tireless, like this one that I saw on East 4th Street this morning:

It's hard to know how the tires were removed with that chain wrapped through the wheels!

Trash Tire

It's hard to say what happened to this tire, that I saw on Avenue D yesterday morning. I can only guess it was some kind of massive explosion:

In no time, however, East Villagers began to fill it with trash.

At least it won't get washed away in a rain storm!

Libertarians

Many people think the East Village is a dangerous place to lock up your bike, and it is!

But sometimes, bicycle tires are returned, like here on Second Avenue:

A libertarian would tell you there's a lesson to be learned here, that the U-lock is like government regulations, and if you're restrained by these, you'll be all mangled, but if you're not, you'll be free, like the part of the bike that wasn't locked up, and like the tires on the left.

What they don't tell you is that a tire disconnected from a bicycle is useless. The best you can hope for is to find another disconnected tire to join in singing praises to Ayn Rand, until you're reconnected with a tire-less bike, and made whole again, or consigned to the back of a garbage truck.

Sidewalk Tire Disposal

Recently, there's been a rash of sidewalk tire disposals in the East Village. This one is on First Avenue, taken two weeks ago:

This was taken three days ago, on East 4th Street:

Ownership of the 4th Street tire has already been claimed by at least two dogs!

Don't be surprised to see these tires appear in some future sculpture… in the East Village Today!
