Donald Trump Was Here

It looks like the President of America, Donald Trump, paid a visit to the East Village, and signed the window of the beloved no name Grocery Inc. on Avenue D!

Behold:

D. Trump signature.

It must have happened while I was at work — I'm sure I would have noticed all the fanfare!

New ATMs

It's been almost a year since the Chase Cash Mob, to help keep Chase banks in the East Village. At that time, two branches had closed, and the Chase ATMs removed from the local Duane Reade drugstores!

I am happy to report (to holders of Citibank accounts) that the Allpoint machines have been replaced with new Citibank ATMs!

Behold, in the Duane Reade on Avenue B and East 2nd Street:

Citibank ATM.

Naturally, I had to visit the Duane Reade on Avenue D and East 1st Street also:

Citibank ATM.

It doesn't help people with Chase accounts, but we still have one branch in the East Village, on Second Avenue and East 10th Street — Citibank account holders don't have any!

The East Village Is Falling Down!

Breaking news: The East Village is falling down!

Behold, as seen on East 6th Street between Avenues C and D, mere minutes ago:

Mere minutes ago.

Before DNAInfo, before Gothamist, even before the New York Post, East Village Today is there to bring you the news, as it happens!

It sure was windy today, wasn't it?

Sidewalk Closed

East Villagers are familiar with sidewalk traffic being hampered by abandoned furniture, but it's not very common to see the sidewalk closed due to it!

That seemed to have been the case here on East 4th Street at Avenue D, oh, about eleven days ago:

Sidewalk closed.

It turns out that the sidewalk was closed because of construction!

Construction.

A short two days later, here is the result:

Here is a close-up of the new wheelchair ramp:

Don't want to get too fancy — it wouldn't be the East Village if it were too fancy!

Gone, And Forgotten

Back in February of this year, there was some question as to the economic health of the beloved New Carolina Deli Grocery, on the corner of Avenue D and East 3rd Street.

That question has been resolved:

Closed.

That leaves only No-Name Grocery Inc. and L.E.S. 7 Day Deli & Grocery for your scary, snack-food purchases!

No Hanging Out

Recently, this sign was added to all the other signs in the window of the beloved L.E.S. 7 Days Deli & Grocery, on Avenue D:

Recent sign.

It waits to be seen if the drug dealer who hang out in front of this store will abide by the new request!

I'm not sure if this sign is new or not:

Mike Store.

I bet a kid made this for his dad!

New Klieg Lights

Last Thursday, as I rode my Citibike around the East Village, I saw this semi truck loaded up with klieg lights, parked outside the Jacob Riis Houses on Avenue D:

Klieg lights.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

They don't look like the standard NYPD klieg lights.

Something's afoot!

Citi-Stroller

Not such a very long time ago, I passed by this Citibike station on Avenue D, and saw this:

The Return Of The 4th Street M-14D Bus Stop

East Villagers who live seriously east are rejoicing at the recent return of the 4th Street bus stop on the M-14D line. This stop was removed while construction of the beloved Educational Alliance's new Center for Recovery and Wellness building was underway.

Here is a picture of one of the city's new electric busses stopped at the newly-reopened spot:

Stopped at newly-reopened stop.

And here it is, the sign making it all official:

It's official.

No longer will M-14D riders be forced to get off at East 6th Street stop and walk down!

East Villagers hope the increased activity the return of this stop brings will help drive away the drug dealers who infest this location!

Blue Is The New Black

It used to be that the East Village was colorless — today, all that's changed!

I was walking across East 2nd Street the other day, when I noticed that the fire escapes of this building are the same color as the Citibikes parked across the street from it!

Behold:

Matching Citibikes and fire escape.

As if that weren't enough, while walking up Avenue D yesterday, I saw this:

Citibus.

A new Citibus!

Or city bus, if you prefer.

Bleached School Bus

I was walking down Avenue D yesterday, when I saw this bleached school bus, parked in front of the beloved Uncle Johnny grocery store:

Bleached school bus.

It says "Charter" on the back of it — I wonder if it's a school bus for a charter school?!

Belted Hydrant

You never know what you're going to see when you go out a walking in the East Village!

Take this, for example: seen on Avenue D this past Friday:

Belt on a fire hydrant.

What can you even say about such a thing?

No-Name Grocery Inc.

Speaking of dilapidated deli/groceries on Avenue D, this beloved no-name Grocery Inc. is but a few short steps from the beloved New Carolina Deli Grocery that I wrote about yesterday!

Chase Cash Mob

When businesses in the East Village start to fail, residents come to their aid by fomenting a cash mob. What this means is that people go to that business on a designated day and spend money, cash, to help the owners.

The beloved Chase Bank is one such business that needs our help!

During the past year, two branches of Chase Bank closed, leaving only the one on Second Avenue and East 10th Street.

Fortunately, there were still Chase ATMs at the beloved Duane Reade drugstores on Avenue B and Avenue D.

Recently, this changed.

Behold, at the Avenue B Duane Reade:

Chase ATM replaced by Allpoint ATM.

…and at the Avenue D Duane Reade:

The same thing.

Why this matters is that the Allpoint ATMs charge a $3.00 fee for withdrawals!

$3.00 fee.

If this keeps up, the East Village will be inundated with payday loan, pawn shops, and other shady establishments!

This is why East Village Today is organizing a cash mob for Chase Bank!

Go to the Chase Bank on Second Avenue and East 10th Street this Saturday, February 25 — open a checking account, sign up for a credit card, get an auto loan…

Free coffee and Dum Dum Pops!

Help keep Chase Bank in the East Village!

Crossing Device

I was walking up Avenue D this morning, when I saw this crossing device at the corner of East 3rd Street:

Crossing device.

Crossing the street just got a whole lot safer!

Of course, you still have the drug dealers to contend with!

Abandoned Bed Frame

I was walking down Avenue D, over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, when I saw this abandoned bed frame beside a trash can, at the corner of East 4th Street:

Abandoned bed frame.

Part of the bed frame even extends into the crosswalk!

I wonder if the Sanitation Department workers picked it up, or if some freegan got it first?!

Trash Tire

It's hard to say what happened to this tire, that I saw on Avenue D yesterday morning. I can only guess it was some kind of massive explosion:

Massive-explosion tire.

In no time, however, East Villagers began to fill it with trash.

At least it won't get washed away in a rain storm!

Theft-Proof Tide

You might not think so, but the East Village is full of thieves!

They don't just steal beer mugs or hearts, they even steal laundry detergent!

The beloved Duane Reade, at the corner of East Houston Street and Avenue D, has a solution:

Anti-theft devices.

Anti-theft devices!

The row beneath this lone bottle was full of bottles of laundry detergent, also with anti-theft devices attached — I just liked the way this group looked, by itself.

Avenue D Pump Station

As part of East Village Today's effort to bring you pictures of the East Village from where no other blogger dares to go, I present the Avenue D Pump Station!

Avenue D Pump Station.

This is also known as the 13th Street Pump Station or, more commonly, the Manhattan Pump Station.

The Manhattan Pump Station provides the Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant with more than half of its flow, 155 million gallons per day for treatment.  Betcha didn't know that!

There are two High Water Mark signs, commemorating the flooding brought by Hurricane Sandy. The first is on East 13th Street:

East 13th Street High Water Mark sign.

The other is on Avenue D:

Avenue D High Water Mark sign.

The East Village isn't all artists and scoundrels!
