Electrifying

East Villagers were stunned — stunned, I say! — to wake up this morning and discover the scaffolding in front of the formerly-beloved dieci on East 10th Street had a possible electrical condition!

Behold:

Possible electrical condition.

Here is a close-up:

This is why a grounding wire is so important!

It's really quite shocking, to say the least.

The East Village Is Falling Down!

Breaking news: The East Village is falling down!

Behold, as seen on East 6th Street between Avenues C and D, mere minutes ago:

Mere minutes ago.

Before DNAInfo, before Gothamist, even before the New York Post, East Village Today is there to bring you the news, as it happens!

It sure was windy today, wasn't it?

Farewell, View

A couple of weeks ago, I was walking across East 7th Street, when I saw this truck in the empty lot at the corner of Second Avenue, with much scaffolding aside the building there:

Much scaffolding.

Maybe they're going to fix the building façade?

Last night, I passed by again, and saw that progress had been made:

A shroud.

The pirate, who lives on the second floor, is losing his view!

Soon enough, a new building will be constructed here, and we will all lose our view, of the pirate flag!

Aarrgghhh!

First Pink, Then Gone

Back in August, I noticed that the beloved Cloak & Dagger, on East 9th Street, had painted the poles of the scaffolding outside their store:

Painted poles.

Pink, of course!

Last night, I was walking past their again, and I saw someone had undone all their hard work!

Behold:

Scaffolding gone.

The scaffolding is gone!

I wonder if the scaffolding owners will leave the poles pink?

Dump

If you've lived in the East Village for any length of time, you will surely know that The Shadow is "New York's ONLY underground newspaper"!

They don't have a regular publishing schedule, but you always know when a new edition is available because you'll see one of their stickers on a scaffolding pole or something, like these that I saw recently, outside the beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill on Avenue C:

The Shadow stickers.

Those two were pretty unscathed, which is not the case of this one, a few short steps away:

Scathed.

Since The Shadow is underground, it's not easy to find a copy. Fortunately, I know a guy, who knows a guy… so I can get one without much difficulty.

Would you expect anything less?!

Hidden Missing Cat Sign

I was walking across East 7th Street this past Saturday, when I noticed something out of place in this mess:

Out of place.

It was this Lost Cat sign:

Lost Cat sign.

How cute, with his little tongue out!

If this were my missing cat, I would not put the sign where people avoid walking!

Festive Scaffolding

Christmas is just a few months away, and the beloved Exit9 Gift Emporium on Avenue A is already decorating!

Behold:

Decorating for Christmas.

Either that or something else!

One thing is certain: their scaffolding sure is festive!

Grounded

Have you ever reached out for a metal piece of scaffolding, to balance yourself for some reason, only to be electrocuted?

Well, that won't happen to you on Avenue C, outside the beloved Alex Shoe Repair Watch Repair!

Safe scaffolding.

In case you don't see what I'm talking about, here is a close-up:

Close-up.

This scaffolding is grounded!

Of course, now you have to worry about tripping on this wire, reaching out for the scaffolding to catch your fall, and then being electrocuted!

It's always something… in the East Village Today!

The Scaffolding

People sometimes ask me, they say: "Hey East Village Today, what's it like to walk under one of those scaffoldings I hear tell of so much? Are they safe?"

Well, I can't answer to their safeness, because they do fall down sometimes, but I can show you what it's like to walk under one!

This is the scaffolding of the new building going up on Avenue A between East 6th and 7th Streets:

*Phew!* We made it!

New Scaffolding on Avenue A

It seems every time I turn around, something new is happening on Avenue A between East 7th Street and St. Mark's Place! Today there is new scaffolding!

OK, maybe this didn't happen today, but I saw it today:

Scaffolding up on Avenue A.

I don't know if this is the reason the scaffolding went up, but beneath it there is work being done on what was once the Odessa Cafe:

Former Odessa Cafe.

This is great news for Ray's Candy Shop — no longer will they be situated near empty and decrepit-looking storefronts!

The days are drawing near when they're going to have to wash that awning though!

Paint, Glorious Paint

(Sung to the Tune of "Food, Glorious Food")

Eleven days ago or so, I posted something about paint being used to spiffy up the front of a store on East 9th Street.

The next day, I took a picture of the scaffold supports, to show how they embellished their façade, in addition to painting:

Embellished vs. non-embellished scaffold supports.

I also saw that they were painting the building above the store:

From the scaffolding to the building.

It's contagious — once you start painting, you just can't stop! I took this today:

Major paint job underway.

I can't wait to see what it'll look like — the East Village just keeps getting better… looking!

Festive Scaffolding Again

I was walking across East 7th Street the other night, when I saw this:

Alternative uses for scaffolding.

This scaffolding was also decorated for Halloween!

I said it once and I'll say it again: East Villagers love Christmas!

Coooooooooool Scaffolding Down

I was walking up Avenue A this morning, on my way to work, when I saw a group of mendicants standing around where I haven't seen them standing before. Right away, I thought to myself that the Coooooooooool scaffolding had been taken down, that stood along the avenue between East 6th and 7th Streets.

Lo and behold, it had!

No more scaffolding, for now.

The building that stood here before is no more, and so there is no further need for scaffolding. Of course, eventually the scaffolding will return, when a new building is constructed, but until then we have this glorious open space!

If you want to know what it looked like before, take a look here.

Something is Missing Here

I know something is missing here, at the corner of Avenue C and East 5th Street, but I don't know what!

Probably scaffolding that's been there forever.

Something is missing.

I'm not sure I've ever seen this without scaffolding in front of it!

Maybe the Last Halloween Post of 2014

I was walking across East 7th Street today when I saw this:

Unshrouded

Wow! Back in early September, I took a picture of this building, on Avenue C and East 5th Street, which had just been shrouded. I expected the shroud to cover it for years, but lo and behold, tonight, it was unshrouded!

Unshrouded building.

Wonders never cease in the East Village!

Rockin' The Ramparts

Give me a C!

Give me 11 O's!

Give me an L!

What's that spell?

Cool.

The East Village is coooooooooool.

Shrouded in a Shroud

Things happen quickly in the East Village. Some things, that is. For instance, this shroud was not around this building on Avenue C and East 6th Street yesterday, and today it is.

What doesn't happen quickly is these scaffoldings coming down. I expect this to be up for years.

The sign at the corner shows the date of the permit end:

Expiration: Unknown.

July 1, 20xx. No year is recorded. One day it will just seem as if the scaffolding has always been there, and when it finally comes down, it will be as if I'm seeing the building behind it for the first time.
