Dump

If you've lived in the East Village for any length of time, you will surely know that The Shadow is "New York's ONLY underground newspaper"!

They don't have a regular publishing schedule, but you always know when a new edition is available because you'll see one of their stickers on a scaffolding pole or something, like these that I saw recently, outside the beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill on Avenue C:

The Shadow stickers.

Those two were pretty unscathed, which is not the case of this one, a few short steps away:

Scathed.

Since The Shadow is underground, it's not easy to find a copy. Fortunately, I know a guy, who knows a guy… so I can get one without much difficulty.

Would you expect anything less?!

New Mural

I was walking up Avenue C recently, when I saw the makings of a new mural on the East 4th Street side of the beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill:

Makings of new mural.

From left to right, it looks like: a guy playing a conga drum, a guy sitting on a table, a kid playing with a dog, and three guys with their backs to it all.

It's got to by representative of something!

Open For Business

After much anticipation, the Alphabet City Deli & Grill, at the corner of Avenue C and East 4th Street, is now beloved — I mean open:

Beloved.

Oddly enough, there were no Grand Opening banners to mark this occasion — just a sign taped to the door saying: Come in we're open.

Here's something interesting: the chip shelves on the right are full, but the candy shelves on the left are almost bare, and the few products they hold — AirHeads Xtreme Bites, Starburst, Sweet Tarts, Wonka Chewy Spree, and David Original Sunflower Seeds — are isolated and right-aligned (as you look at them from the outside).

There's also what looks like a funhouse mirror beside them!

This deli & grill should be the source of many interesting stories for years to come!

It's Only A Matter of Minutes Now

The clock is rapidly ticking down to the Grand Opening of the soon-to-be-beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill, on Avenue C.

Earlier in the week, the doors were open, offering passers-by an eyeful of the delectable wares soon to offered for sale:

Delectable wares.

Are those Entenmann's cakes?! East Villagers love Entenmann's cakes!

*faint*

Introducing: Alphabet City Deli & Grill

It seems like a life-time since the beloved Avenue C Deli Corp. (on Avenue C and East 4th Street) closed, leaving East Villagers to wonder what new shopping emporium would take its place.

Now, the wait is almost over!

Behold:

New signage.

The soon-to-be-beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill's new signage was put up last night!

Not just a deli, but a deli & grill! And if you have any doubts about what that means, the fire on the signage should put those to rest!

Already forgotten are the blue awning and Hot & Cold Food Open 24 Hours sign that beset this corner in the past:

Already forgotten.

The blue awning is so forgotten that it's not even in a picture!

So if you're hankering for some ice cream, or fresh smoothies, or cold drinks, or hot&cold sandwiches, or hookah accessories, or cigarettes, or cigars, or phone cards, or EBT, or ATM, or organic products, or hot & cold sandwiches, then head on over to the beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill.

It's the Wal*Mart of the East Village! (In that they have everything you could ever want. Except beer.)

Post Script:

East Villagers will notice that I mentioned "hot & cold sandwiches" twice in the description of items for purchase, above. That was no mistake!

Take a look:

East 4th Street side.

And:

Avenue C side.

It should be immediately noticeable that these are not the same items: one has a space before and after the ampersand, and the other has no spaces!

Post-Post Script:

The East Village Welcoming Committee has already left their calling card on the new sign:

Calling card.

It's like this sign has always been here!

For Your Protection

I stopped into the beloved Alphabet City Deli & Grill on Avenue C the other day — the local deli, bakery, magazine, grocery, lotto, soda, beer, and more store — to get me a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll. That's when I saw this:

Individually-wrapped carrots and beets.

These beets (and carrots) are guaranteed to be untouched by other beets (and carrots)!

The apples, on the other hand — forget it! Who knows what those apples could be picking up from the other apples!

East Villagers love a discrete beet (and carrots)!
