Caution, Parking

I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Sunday, when I saw this woman gathering up the caution tape that had fallen into the pile of gravel there:

I didn't understand why she was doing it, but at the same time: I didn't care!

Later, walking back home the same way, I figured it out:

Parking spot.

Parking spots in the East Village are hard to find — you have to do a bit of improvising sometimes.

I'm still not sure what the caution tape had to do with anything though.

Imminent Collapse

These cellar doors, on East 6th Street, are collapsing into the swamp the East Village is built on:

It's a good thing that orange barrel is tied to the riot gates with that caution tape, otherwise it might fall into the cellar when those doors finally give way!

Second Avenue Bike Lane

Back in late September, I was walking down Second Avenue, when I saw that the bike lane had been resurfaced:

Being avid bicyclists, East Villagers are always happy with bike-lane improvements!

Alas, it was not meant to last long.

Behold, as seen eight days ago:

Open trash can door blocking bike lane.

An open trash can door, with trash can protruding, was obstructing the bike lane!

Bicyclists had to think quickly to avoid hitting it:

Maybe it was left open deliberately, to prevent bicyclists from riding through the puddle!

Dangerous Ramp

You are no doubt aware of the sidewalk repairs taking place throughout the East Village. One such repair was taking place outside the newly-beloved Starbucks, on Avenue A:

You might think the ramp is dangerous because it isn't fixed to the ground, or because it's splintering, and could give someone a splinter, but no — it's because there are nails sticking out of it!

At very least, they could make you trip!

It looks like the Pac-Man graffito on First Avenue is shocked, shocked I say!, to see the orange barrels toppled over, as they are:

Curbs Galore

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about a new corner curb installed at Avenue D and East 4th Street.

Since that time, new intersection curbs have gone in all over the East Village!

Take a look:

Where do they keep all the straight and rounded curbs before they install them, you ask?

On East 7th Street!

These and many other intersections are receiving new corner curbs — I guess there's nothing wrong with the curbs between corners!

Sidewalk Closed

East Villagers are familiar with sidewalk traffic being hampered by abandoned furniture, but it's not very common to see the sidewalk closed due to it!

That seemed to have been the case here on East 4th Street at Avenue D, oh, about eleven days ago:

Sidewalk closed.

It turns out that the sidewalk was closed because of construction!

I was walking across East 6th Street this past Tuesday, when I saw what looks all the world like a new Citibike station going in, near the corner of Avenue A:

Wheelbarrow Full of Water

I was walking across East 4th Street a couple of weeks ago, when I saw these orange cones and orange barrels, warning East Villagers of the the danger ahead:

I crossed the street to safety, which is where I saw this:

A wheelbarrow full of water.

No hoses, no buckets… it wasn't raining — how did the water get in there?

Who even carries water in a wheelbarrow? It could spill!

Bike Hazards

Back in late-Spring/early-Summer, I was riding my Citibike down Second Avenue, on my way home from work. Like all Citibikers, I stopped when the light turned red, at the intersection of East 10th Street.

Suddenly, a bird sitting above me pooped!

Luckily, I am charmed, so it missed me. Still, I am wary now, each time I stopped at this light.

Recently, they removed the old payphone that stood at this corner, and replaced it with this hole, and some reinforcing rods, and orange barrels, and caution tape:

A day or two later, they replaced the hole with this cement covering:

It probably won't have any effect on birds pooping, though. You still have to be wary… in the East Village Today!
