I was at the intersection of Avenue A and East 9th Street recently, when I saw this discarded onion atop a sewer grate that has been designated not a trash can:

Somebody needs to tell the owner of this onion to remove it from this sewer grate!

Bacon Cheeseburger On The Ground

Who does this? Who buys a bacon cheeseburger with side salads, eats the salads, then throws the bacon cheeseburger on the ground?

Someone who lives on East 6th Street, that who!

Politeness

How do the proprietors of the beloved Solid Gold, on East 5th Street, stop East Villagers from stealing the things they leave out over night?

Things left out over night.

They put a out a sign telling people not to.

Duh!

Duh.

Naturally, it helps to be polite.

The impact of this sign went beyond the table — it extended to the adjacent trash can, where someone put out their mushrooms for freegans to take:

Free mushrooms.

In fact, it extended next door, to where someone put out an onion for those same freegans:

Free onion.

Too Much

You have to wonder what East Villagers are thinking when they open an individual portion of food, like apple sauce.

Do they think, when they open it, it'll be too much to eat in a single sitting? You might think so!

Behold, as seen on East 7th Street:

Maybe the solution to this is smaller portions, like spoonfuls?

The extra packaging is a small price to pay for a reduction in food wastage!

I was walking across East 6th Street recently, when I saw this car parked beside a pile of what looked like abandoned barbecue:

Another Abandoned Cantaloupe

It seems like only eleven days ago that I saw the abandoned cantaloupe on the sidewalk outside the beloved El Jardin del Paraiso, on East 4th Street.

It was an event to remember, but also an event that I thought would never repeat itself.

Imagine my surprise when I found myself walking down East 4th Street again this past Saturday, and saw this:

I was walking past the East 4th Street entrance to the beloved El Jardin del Paraiso this past Friday morning, when I spotted a cantaloupe on the sidewalk:

You may notice that the color of the cantaloupe is similar to the color of the building on East 5th Street, in the background. And while the cantaloupe is probably not famous, the building is!

Banana On A Fence

Long ago, I had a blog, and one of  the features of that blog was a series called "Banana Peels", which consisted of pictures of… you guessed it: banana peels!

I thought about that when walking across East 4th Street recently and spotted this banana on a fence:

It's funny to think that this banana once grew on a tree in Central America, was picked, shipped to North America, and made its way to the East Village, only to be abandoned on this fence.

Abandoned Corn on the Cob

As recently as eight days ago, I wrote about corn on the cob being thrown out by P.S. 15, on East 4th Street.

This past Thursday, I discovered an abandoned box of corn on the cob, just past the front gates of the school, beside a siamese connection for the Fire Department, and a rat trap:
