The Breaks

There is nothing more exciting in the life an East Villager than the shooting of a movie or television show!

I was riding my Citibike down Second Avenue yesterday evening, when I came upon this site, at the corner of St. Mark's Place:

Movie gear everywhere.

Are these real crusties, or movie crusties?

Crusties.

Are these real firemen, or movie firemen?

Firemen.

All of this was taking place at the beloved Orpheum Theater, home of the beloved Stomp!

Stomp.

Who knows what magic is created inside the secret tent?

Creating magic.

This movie will be called The Breaks:

The Breaks.

According to the Internet Movie Database:
Three friends united by their love of hip-hop work to make their big mark in the music industry.
It's just like real life… in the East Village Today!

Spoiler Alert

I was walking down St. Mark's Place last night, when I noticed these signs, alerting East Villagers of another exciting movie or television shooting taking place on the block!

No Parking signs.

Further down the block, I spotted this:

Alert!

For those East Villagers who don't know, the protuberance on the back of this car is called a spoiler — not the kind of thing you want when shooting a movie or television show!

New Line

I was walking up Second Avenue this past Sunday, when I saw this sign, taped to a lamp post:

New Line Productions, Inc.

As you know, East Villagers are always excited when this neighborhood is used to film TV shows, and films! Drivers move their cars hours in advance — tow-truck drivers rarely have to move anything!

True to their word, the film crew was set up along East 4th Street, Monday morning:

Set up Monday morning.

I think it's a film about the new Second Avenue subway line, hence: New Line Productions!

It's done with CGI… in the East Village Today!

Movie in the Park

One of the great things about the East Village is that during the Summer, there are movies in Tompkins Square Park!

Last night was "Big Night", everyone's favorite movie about food!

This showing was special, for two reasons: 1) the presence of the Terrahawk Mobile Utility Surveillance Tower, brought in to rid the park of the enemy; and 2) … Well, take a look for yourself:

Thank you. Thank you. You're too kind!

Side Streets of the East Village

(The following is not a paid advertisement.)

East Villagers love side streets! On the Upper East Side, it's all about the avenues: Park, Madison, Fifth; down here, not so much.

Here's a picture of an East Village side street, East 7th Street:

Making movies, on location.

But the side streets can be unsettling for some. Luckily, there's a web site called Manhattan Sideways, and they have information about side street ventures all over Manhattan, including… you guess it: the East Village!

In fact, there are three categories for the East Village: Date Night; Cozy Day Out; and Craft Beer. Something for everyone! Except kids. But really, kids shouldn't be out on their own, they should be with their parents.

So, come check out the East Village side streets — maybe you'll even get to be an extra in a movie!

Some Kind of Crazy Thing or Another Going On

I was walking up First Avenue just now, when I saw this:

Some kind of crazy thing or another going on.

I couldn't tell what it was: a movie shoot? A photo shoot? It looked like too many people for a photo shoot, and too few for a movie. There was a food table behind the lights on the left though!

There's something cool going on in the no matter what the time, or temperature… in the East Village!

Making Movies

She gets rock'n'roll
a rock'n'roll station
And a rock'n'roll dream
She's making movies on location…
"Skate Away", Dire Straits
Movie makers love the East Village, and East Villagers love having their neighborhood in the movies!

I was walking across East 7th Street this morning, past Tompkins Square Park. I felt almost like I was in a movie, and I almost was!

Setting up for another shoot.

It looks like the chess tables will be featured prominently in this one:

They had to take up part of the fence.

I wondered where all the drunks and drug addicts went, who usually sit there. I figured they were around somewhere – they never go too far.

I didn't have to wonder for long! Here they were already, on the next block:

Sitting in their own pew.

This looked to be a big day for the movie makers. They stretched all the way down East 7th Street:

East 7th Street.

and around the corner onto Second Avenue!

Second Avenue.

They were even using an apartment on the corner building:

"Second floor, right?"

And the best part is I won't even have to pay to see it in the theater — I lived it!
