Scarred For Life

As everyone knows, St. Mark's Place is the mecca for body mutilation in the East Village.

There, the focus is on the simple disfigurations like tattoos and piercings; the further East you go, the more self-destructive it becomes.

By the time you get to the beloved East Side Ink, on Avenue B near East 6th Street, things get downright scary!

Behold:

Downright scary.

Yes, not only can you draw cartoons on your skin, you can literally become Scarface!

Laser? That's for disintegrating yourself when you sober up and discover what you did!

Missing Pig

This is the strangest thing: I can't find any of the pictures I took of the Porchetta pig, the pig statue that graced the window of the formerly-beloved Porchetta, on East 7th Street!

Here is a picture of the former Porchetta, taken last week:

The former Porchetta.

…and here is the counter where the pig statue sat (to the right of the For Lease sign, above):

No more pig statue.

Maybe it's not so strange — I never could get a decent shot of that thing, between the riot gates, and people sitting next to it, and the reflection in the window…

Lawn-Flamingo Window Box

Speaking of taking it with you, one of the greatest decorations in the history of lawns is the lawn flamingo — kitsch-wise, it's probably first!

While walking across East 4th Street recently, I saw this miniature lawn flamingo beside a flower box:

Miniature lawn flamingo.

"I just flew in from Florida, and boy are my wings tired!"

Isn't that a cool reflection in the window?
