A Beautiful Puddle

When I first saw this puddle, on East 7th Street, I thought it was one of the most beautiful puddles I'd ever seen:

Beautiful puddle.

The picture doesn't do it justice, though — it just doesn't look the same.

(I should have moved that trash bag.)

Watch Everything

I was walking across East 7th Street this past Thursday, when I saw a flash of bright pink in my peripheral field of vision.

I looked down the cellar stairs from whence it came, and saw this:

"Watch Your Head, Please!"

"Watch Your Head Please!" (East Villagers are very polite.)

I think the sign is meant for people who aren't watching their feet: they trip over the trash bags at the bottom of the stairs, and hit their heads!

Maybe there should be a sign on the steps that says: Watch Your Feet Please!

Cool Graffiti Coverup

Almost a year ago to the day, the graffitier known as COOL graffitied on the front of the formerly-beloved Hop Devil Grill, on St. Mark's Place near Avenue A.

Today, with construction work taking place at that location, the graffiti is covered.

Behold:

Graffiti is covered.

Wait… what's that I see?

Trash bag on construction fence.

It's a trash bag at the top of the construction fence!

My guess is someone dropped the trash bag out of their window, intending for it to land behind the fence, but it landed on the fence instead… and now blocks the fire escape!

It's like the wild west here!

Blandalism

I was walking up Avenue B recently, past the More Orgasm, Less Wargasm graffiti and accompanying trash bags, when I saw this bit of commentary written on the wall beside it:

Blandalism.

Fighting fire with fire — that's the East Village way!

A New Twist

I was walking down Avenue B last week, when I came upon this bit of graffiti:

Graffiti with frame.

The best way to get East Villagers to see your message is to frame it — and the best way to keep the message fresh is to rearrange the frame periodically:

Graffiti with rearranged frame.

An East Village take on the old "Make Love, Not War" slogan from the 1960s.

Groovy!

Hanging Out the Trash

I was walking across St. Mark's Place — oh, about 15 days ago! — when I saw this bag of trash hanging on the door of the beloved Rakka Cafe:

Trash hanging on the door.

East 7th Street

I've been getting a lot of pictures from East 7th Street recently:

It's never a good idea to park under trash.

It's not such a surprise — a lot of pictures from the earliest days of this blog were from East 7th Street.

Therefore, I decided to bestow the

East Village Today Best Street in the East Village Award

to…

(drum roll…)

East 7th Street!

Congratulations, East 7th Street — you deserve it!

Trash or Art?

Everywhere you go in the East Village, there is trash. At the same time, everywhere you go, there is art!

I was walking across East 7th Street yesterday, when I saw this:

Trash, or art-chair?

Here is a close-up:

Art chair.

One man's art is another man's chair!

Well, I told you everywhere you look… etc. Right next door was this:

Trash, or office furniture?

No close-up necessary.

This same block was once home to the 7th Street Art Project Thing — you never know what you'll see on this block!

The First Robin of Spring

I was walking across East 4th Street the other day, when I saw this:

The first robin of Spring.

The first robin of Spring!

Flowers are blooming… birds are foraging in the trash… the circle of life continues… in the East Village Today!
