The Very Small Balcony

East Villagers love balconies, no matter how small.

Here is a picture of a very small balcony, that I saw on East 4th Street:

Very small balcony.

It looks like it would be difficult to get onto, and wouldn't hold more than two people comfortably, but what a view!

The East Village is Full

Well, it finally happened: the East Village is full up!

I saw this sign on Saturday, on East 7th Street:

Last remaining residence.

Here is the building:

The building.

At least it has a balcony — East Villagers do love their balconies!

Balconies and Flags

East Villagers are often heard to say "If only that building [next to mine] wasn't there, I would…"

Well, at 125 Second Avenue, that sentence can now be completed:

Balconies and flags, now on display.

"If only that building wasn't there, I would build a balcony!"

"If only that building wasn't there, I would hang a flag in my window and show people how patriotic I am!"

Or…

"If only that building was still there, I wouldn't have to bring this mattress inside!"

It's always something… in the East Village Today!

Balcony Furniture

One of the benefits of having a balcony is sitting on it, which is just what these people do, at this building off Second Avenue:

Balcony furniture.

From a distance, balcony furniture is so cute — it looks like little dollhouse furniture!

I wonder if those are shared balconies? I bet they are.

Balcony Tents

As you already know, balconies are very cool, and everyone should have one.

This morning, I was walking across East 8th Street when I saw this:

A tent on a balcony!

Someone erected a tent on their balcony! I wonder if this is a new Air-BnB strategy?

East Villagers are really imaginative!

Cool Balconies

I'm going to start a series soon, called The Balconies of the East Village.

In the meantime, here are a couple of cool balconies I spotted on East 3rd Street this morning:

Cool balconies.

Here's a close-up:

Red bucket on bottom balcony.

It's funny how only two floors have them, and not even the top two. And they're rusty.

Rust never sleeps… in the East Village!

Balconies in the Making

Have you ever seen balconies being created? Have you ever wondered how they stay up? At the construction site on Avenue C between East 4th and 5th Streets, the balconies are being created now:

As you can see, the I-beams that are used to support the floor extend further to support the balcony. That's a relief — there's no reason to worry about them falling off!

Here's another view, from the other side:

Each corner of the balcony will be secure.

Now don't that make you feel a whole lot better?!

The Balconies of East Houston

Balconies are cool. Every new building should have a balcony!

These balconies overlook East Houston Street:

East Houston Street balconies.

If I had a balcony, I'd be out on it right now, writing this, with my coat and gloves on, and a light…

Probably at this point I'd get up and come back inside. It's cold out there!

Balconies of St. Mark's Place

I was walking down St. Mark's Place this past Sunday, when I noticed these balconies:

Protruding balconies.

They don't look very spacious, but hey, any balcony is better than no balcony!

Balconies

If I had a balcony, I would definitely use it. I would sit out there with my lemonade, taking pictures of people walking by, and put them on East Village Today. People walking down the street with their smart phones, reading this blog, would then see themselves, in slightly less than real time.

Look honey, it's us sitting on our balcony!
