Worse In The Snow

Even a winter wonderland of snow can't make everything in the East Village look better.

Take this chair, for instance, on St. Mark's Place. Arguably, it could be said to look worse in the snow:

Looking worse in the snow.

And this intersection at Avenue B and East 7th Street — honestly, I don't think it looks better or worse:

Neither better nor worse.

Winter Storm East Village Today works in mysterious ways.

Very Stonehengey

I was walking past the Lower East Side Ecology Center Community Garden on East 7th Street, back in December, when I saw these stones stacked like some kind of henge:

Some kind of henge.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

I'm sure it's some a shrine to some chair goddess — East Villagers are way into that kind of thing!

Atop Cellar Doors

It's hard to image carrying a cup of coffee outside and sitting on a backless, plastic stool on top of rickety cellar doors, but that's only one of the amenities available to East Villagers at the beloved Southern Cross Coffee, on East 5th Street:

Backless, plastic stools.

Not to be outdone, the beloved So-Hair, just down the block, offers wooden chairs atop their own cellar doors, for customers awaiting haircuts:

Backful and wooden.

Cellar doors — the official doors of the East Village!

Signing Bonus

I was walking up First Avenue last night, thinking about the fact that when a store closes, overnight no one remembers what was there before!

As if to test this, I saw this Retail For Lease sign, between the beloved Saifee Hardware & Garden on one side and the beloved Dojo Sushi:

What was here before?

No idea.

Naturally, I took a peek inside:

Inside.

Whoever rents this place might get this chair — free!

Free chair.

How's that for a signing bonus?!

Leany Chair

It's a chilly day in the East Village today, so I before I don me now my Fall apparel and head out, I'm going to post this picture from warmer times:

Warmer times.

Woah — it just struck me: it's another abandoned chair!

Wait in Comfort

Sometimes it happens that when you go to get a Citibike, there aren't any!

It's easy enough to check your smart phone app to find the next nearest location, but here on East 5th Street, you can just sit and wait in comfort!

Sit and wait.

Citibikes just keep getting better!

Sidewalk Office

I was walking across East 2nd Street the other day, when I happened upon this matching chair and table set:

Matching chair and table.

The leaves of the table look like they need some support, but it's a start!

The owner wasn't in, as you can see, but he reserved his seat by placing a newspaper on it.

The Mysterious Floating Chair

What is there to say about the mysterious, floating chair, outside the beloved The Cut Barber Shop on East 7th Street?

Levitating chair.

Another day, another incident of levity… in the East Village Today!

Artsy Trashy

The thing about so many East Villagers being artists is that everything becomes an art-piece, even trash.

Behold, June 3rd on East 3rd (Street):

East 3rd Street art piece.

I'm not talking about the drawings on the stubby-legged chair — I'm talking about the entire ensemble!

Sometimes there's velvet ropes, sometimes not, but art springs eternal… in the East Village Today!

Life During Wartime

I sleep in the daytime
I work in the nighttime
I might not ever get home

(What the hell is he talking about this time?)
