Samo©III

If there's one thing you can say about the existence of an East Villager, it's lustrous!

Which is why this retro graffiti, that I saw inside a pay phone booth on Second Avenue and East 6th Street, is so odd:

Odd graffiti.

You know who lacks luster? People who don't know how to spell!

Three, Three, & Three

I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Saturday, when I saw these pay phones, across the street from the beloved Gem Spa:

Pay phones.

Three pay phones, three abandoned cups perched on top of them, and three dangling receivers — it's a work of art!

You just can't make this stuff up.

Leany Chair

It's a chilly day in the East Village today, so I before I don me now my Fall apparel and head out, I'm going to post this picture from warmer times:

Warmer times.

Woah — it just struck me: it's another abandoned chair!

Citibikes and Pay Phones

I was thinking the other day: The reason East Villagers love Citibikes so much is because they're useful, they're plentiful, and they cost very little for the benefit derived. In many ways, they're just like pay phones!

Citibikes on East 11th Street.

Of course, in some ways, they're not!

First Avenue pay phones.

Patti Smith, Phone Home

I was walking across East 2nd Street this morning, when I saw this sign in a pay phone booth:

Are you Patti Smith?

Wouldn't it be funny if Patti Smith saw this sign, and called the number and said "Why yes, I am!"

In case you don't know, Patti Smith is a singer. She's very popular today with her song "People Have the Power".

East Villagers love Patti Smith!

Clean Working Pay Phone

A lot of people think that East Villagers are all up on the latest gadgetry, that we all have iPhones, for instance, and no longer have need for coin-operated pay phones.

Au contraire, Pierre! Clean, working pay phones can be found all through the East Village. There's even an app you can download that will tell you where they are!

The other day, as I approached this pay phone on the corner of East 3rd Street and Avenue B, I saw the receiver and cord on the sidewalk. I thought maybe some intemperate East Villager received one too many busy signals and took out his frustration on the phone itself.

But no! The receiver either came from somewhere else, or was accidentally left behind by the telephone repairman, because as you can see, the receiver is in place!

Clean, working pay phone, in the cold.

So the next time you're in the East Village, use a pay phone to call your Mom and tell her Hi! She'll appreciate it!
