Dancing Emma

I was walking across East 7th Street yesterday, when I saw this banner of one-time East Villager Emma Goldman:

Banner of Emma Goldman.

Emma Goldman is famous for having said "If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution."

Looking at that face, though, I'm prone to thinking that people didn't want her to dance because she was so sullen! Can you imagine her on the dance floor, glaring at the band?!

When I got to the end of East 7th Street, at The Bowery, I saw another banner, this time of Che Guevara:

Banner of Che Guevara.

Che Guevara now, I bet he could dance until dawn — even with his asthma!

Free Trial Class

East Villagers love dancing, and they love free things!

So this offer for a free dance class, at the beloved Avenue C studio, on Avenue C, hits just the right note:

Free dance class.

Of course, it's for youths only, but there's a lot of youths on Avenue C!

Come Dancing

As East Villagers know, musicians are notorious for starting late. If the announced time of a show is 8:00, you can be sure the band won't go on until almost 9:00 (except at Lincoln Center, or Carnegie Hall)!

So when this past weekend's Punk Jamboree started on time, the only people there were the organizer, the band, and some crusties!

This chap below, with the tattoo on his back…

…tried to get his fellow crusties to come dance, but they would have none of it:

"We're having none of it."

He was finally successful convincing a gent in a wheelchair, but it's hard to know how much input the fellow had in the matter!

Once in place, however, they all had a rollicking good time:

Halloween Dog Parade Dancer

It goes without saying: Not everyone has a dog!

And yet, the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade is such a festive event, even people without dogs get swept up in the festivity!

Here is one such person:

Punk Rock Concert — Day 2

Yesterday was the second day of the two-day punk rock concert in Tompkins Square Park.

I didn't get there until, oh, about 6:00pm! I don't know what I did all day — I took a nap at one point. East Villagers need their beauty rest!

Anyway, here are some video clips of what I saw. This is Nihilistics:

Generally, East Villagers don't dance — yesterday was an exception! The Deceivers brought people (executives, joggers, crusties) together in a way no other band ever has in the history of the East Village:

Next year, I think this should be held in September, after the New York University students are back. They would be dancing too!

Punk Rock Concert — Day 1

Today was Day 1 of the punk rock concert in Tompkins Square Park that, as organizers of both events agree, has nothing to do with the Tompkins Square Park Sleep-Over occurring in the same place, at the same time!

They finally put up posters around the park:

I  was fashionably late to the concert, but it turns out the concert was fashionably late starting! When I arrived, the first group, Schizo, was playing:

After them was a band called Simon and the Bar Sinisters. They were so rockin', people started dancing!:

There were more bands after this one, but I left fashionably early, so I didn't see them.

A good time was had by all… in the East Village Today!

Dancing in the Park

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park this past Friday morning, when I spotted this:

Dancing in the park.

Just another one of the joys of living in the East Village!
