Duelling Graffitiers

Lo, these seventeen days ago, I was walking across East 6th Street, approaching the local Dunkin' Donuts, on First Avenue, when I saw this bit of graffito:

Well, duh — East Villagers don't need to be told how to spell NYC!

Because my blogging duties take me all over the East Village, I was not able to return to this site until nine days later, when this is the mess I beheld:

What a mess!

Here is what I think happened: One person, with a can of white spray paint, crossed out "NYC not NYU", then wrote "NYU is NYC", "Columbia is NYC", and "CUNY is NYC". Then, another person, with his own can of white spray paint, crossed out all of those and wrote "SMU is NYC". Then, as an afterthought, wrote "Sorry".

Why do I think that, you ask? Because the writing of the NYU, Columbia, and CUNY messages is the same; the SMU is different, it's doubled-up, and the "i" in "is" is lower-case.

Welcome Back NYU Students

East Villagers are proud to welcome back returning (and first-time) New York University students!

Here is one of them, relaxing in the back of a truck, on East 10th Street and Second Avenue:

He looks like he's already studying! Maybe one day he'll be a doctor, or a lawyer, or a child psychologist! The possibilities approach endlessness!

And when he leaves, he'll take a little bit of the East Village with him, spreading coolness wherever he goes!

Punk Rock Concert — Day 2

Yesterday was the second day of the two-day punk rock concert in Tompkins Square Park.

I didn't get there until, oh, about 6:00pm! I don't know what I did all day — I took a nap at one point. East Villagers need their beauty rest!

Generally, East Villagers don't dance — yesterday was an exception! The Deceivers brought people (executives, joggers, crusties) together in a way no other band ever has in the history of the East Village:


Next year, I think this should be held in September, after the New York University students are back. They would be dancing too!

Barney Building

This is why the East Village is so cool.

While I was walking around this past Sunday, I saw this — the Barney building! — over on Stuyvesant Street:

According to the NYU web site: "The Barney building is home to the Department of Art and Art Professions".

What better place than the East Village for an arts building?!

Autumn on the Roof of New York

I didn't make it over to 7th Street today — I was out of town. Did anyone make it over there? Did the woman in the shorts finish her project, as she said she would?
