One Baby Step Forward

A mere eleven days ago, I wrote how sockless East Villagers were urgently awaiting the opening of the beloved The Sock Man, on St. Mark's Place.

Since that time, one baby step forward has been taken, with the addition of the name over the door — I predict the re-opening is imminent:

Name over door.

It certainly is a festive-looking place — the beloved East Village Books looks rather homely in comparison!

The Most Perfect East Village Picture

When I first took this picture, I wanted to write about the messed up sidewalk polygon, but the more I looked at it, the more I saw, and I realized: this could easily be the most perfect East Village picture ever!

First, let me introduce it: I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Tuesday, when I saw this:

What makes this the most perfect East Village picture, you ask? It's got everything: a messed-up sidewalk square; a sidewalk square than isn't even a square!; two buckets that were meant to protect the wet cement — one that's partially on the cement, the other that's nowhere near it!; broken caution tape; a hovel-like bookstore; a hovel-like basement apartment looking out onto cellar doors; and graffiti!

And I've written about both of these places before: apartment on left; and East Village Books.

Add that to the list… this is the East Village Today!

Highest Prices Anywhere

East Village Books, on St. Mark's Place, is an unusual store:

Unusual store.

Most stores advertise that you will pay the lowest prices for their wares. Other stores advertise that the price you pay will be competitive. East Village Books, on the other hand, advertises that the prices paid are the highest!

No bargains here.

Those scholarly libraries must be pretty valuable, but if this were my store, I wouldn't advertise higher prices. I would lure people in with promises of lower prices, then hook them with my higher-priced, high-quality goods!

East Village Books Book Donations

I passed by East Village Books on St. Mark's Place today, when I saw something curious. They have a book donations box outside, for people who want to donate books to them but don't want to enter the store:

As if to taunt their donors, they put the book donations box right next to the sign that says "We Buy Books"! These people really don't want to enter that store! And yet they want to give them their books.

Curious.

East Village Books

The other day, I posted something about a sidewalk bookseller. Those are not the only booksellers in the East Village though. There's also East Village Books:

"Look, it was even mentioned on East Village Today."

I've only been inside a couple of times. I don't think I bought anything either time. As I wrote previously, I prefer to get my books from the library.

Maybe the woman selling books from a table on Avenue A should move her table in front of this store. Then they could talk about books with each other, while waiting for customers.
