No Parking Update

Things are going to get pretty noisy for the itinerant bookseller on St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue!

It looks like those garbage cans and 2x4s that stopped people from parking their cars beside his book tables were holding the place for a dumpster!

It probably won't be safe to leave his wares beside the dumpster — freegans will think it's being thrown away!

Speaking of thrown away, someone abandoned this television set just behind where I was standing when I took the picture above:

No Parking

Back in June, I wrote about the gentrification that happened on Second Avenue, that displaced the beloved bookseller.

It looks like he's really taken to his new St. Mark's Place location though! Passing by yesterday, I saw this line of garbage cans and 2x4s that not only prevent people from parking beside his tables, but give him mobility behind them:

I wouldn't be surprised to see walls go up there soon!

Crusties vs. Bookseller

Walking around the East Village today, I noticed that the guy who usually blocks half the sidewalk on Second Avenue with his book tables had moved onto St. Mark's Place:

In his place on Second Avenue were these crusties:

I'm going to guess that the crusties were already in place when the bookseller arrived, and he didn't even bother trying to set up there!

Bookseller Way

Here is a picture of the sidewalk in front of the formerly-beloved branch of Chase Bank, on the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place, the day after it snowed:

Apparently, the shoveller couldn't be bothered to make a path wider than the shovel itself!

If you are familiar with this corner, you will recall that this is where an East Village street vendor sells books. He was not set up on the day I took this picture, but the very next day, there he was again:

Notice how he set up his table alongside the path, causing people who stopped at his tables to divert foot-traffic into the hazardous area behind them!

Another Success

Whenever East Village Today points out a mess that needs to be cleaned, or renovations needed to store fronts, they get fixed!

Back around, oh, October 30th or so, I wrote about an itinerant bookseller outside the formerly-beloved Chase Bank branch on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place, who put his books on the sidewalk instead of on a table.

No doubt after having read my post, there is now a table at this location:

Itinerant Bookseller

As I wrote in Vandals & Vendors:

Since the closing of our local Chase Bank, the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place has become a very popular location for vandals and itinerant street-vendors alike.

You might not have noticed from the pictures I showed (especially since I didn't call attention to it), but there is an itinerant bookseller on that corner too:

Most street booksellers put their books on tables, but this is a no-frills corner!

So if you're looking for something cheap to read, you could probably do worse than buying a book here.

This is a curious sign, on Second Avenue:

What is up with that tiny little A?

On a completely unrelated note, I think the second-floor is where the bookseller Harris <Something> sold books after he moved off the street. I don't think he lived on the street, he just sold books there.

East Village Books

The other day, I posted something about a sidewalk bookseller. Those are not the only booksellers in the East Village though. There's also East Village Books:

"Look, it was even mentioned on East Village Today."

I've only been inside a couple of times. I don't think I bought anything either time. As I wrote previously, I prefer to get my books from the library.

Maybe the woman selling books from a table on Avenue A should move her table in front of this store. Then they could talk about books with each other, while waiting for customers.
