No Glacier For You

This past Saturday, I was walking by the site of the former First Avenue glacier, at East 2nd Street, when I saw what I could only describe as a concentrated effort to prevent the return of said glacier (and with it, the naming of said glacier after its discoverer: me)!

Behold:

No glacier for you, East Village!

If the city doesn't want a glacier on First Avenue — a guaranteed tourist attraction! — they must have a good reason.

And it's probably better that polar bears don't roam the streets… in the East Village Today!

Letter From US Geological Survey

Approximately ten days ago, I told you that I contacted the U.S. Geological Survey and requested that the glacier at First Avenue and East 2nd Street be named the "East Village Today Glacier".

Well, I got a response today! Here it is:

Dear East Village Today, 

Thank you for your correspondence regarding the ice at the corner of First Avenue and East 2nd Street in the East Village of New York City, and your request: 1) that this ice be designated a glacier; and 2) that this glacier be named the "East Village Today Glacier". 

We sent a team of investigators to survey the site, and we regret to inform you that due to the effects of warming, the ice has melted. As a result, we could not make the determination that this ice qualified as a glacier, and therefore, we cannot give it a name.

Maybe it's better that we don't have a glacier in the East Village, as cool as it might sound. I guess I'll have to find some other way to memorialize myself!

Ice Stream Approaching Avenue A

The ice stream has been growing wider and deeper along the north side of East 2nd Street, moving eastward from the First Avenue glacier:

Oh, by the way, I applied to the U.S. Geological Survey to have the First Avenue glacier named the "East Village Today Glacier"! They will respond in seven to ten business days. Exciting news!

Could This Happen Here?

The First Avenue Glacier is growing, this much is known.

This morning, when I passed by it on my way to the subway, I thought about the possibility of it continuing to grow. I've already shown that it's moving northward. What if it keeps growing, and connects to the polar ice cap? This could be in our future:

Polar bears roam the East Village.

First Avenue Glacier Melting

East Villagers don't know much about melting glaciers. Why would they? — until recently there were no glaciers here to be concerned with!

To bring you up to speed, here is a picture of rivers of water flowing on top of a glacier in Greenland (where the Beatles made their left turn on their first trip to America!):

Now, the same thing is happening here! This is a picture of the First Avenue Glacier, taken two days ago:

Meanwhile,  the glacier has begun to spread to the north side of East 2nd Street!

No one knows why this is happening. I think it's time to bring out the big guns, so to speak, and drive this glacier back to whence it came!

Glacier Control

I mentioned that I had more to say about the First Avenue Glacier, and here it is:

I was walking home from work the other night, when I passed the glacier at First Avenue and East 2nd Street. It was quite an opportune moment to be passing by, because I saw this:

DSNY salt truck backing up over glacier.

The Sanitation Department salt truck slowly backed up over the glacier, its beep-beep-beep in full effect. Then, just as I suspected was about to happen, it started dispensing salt!

The sanitation workers go to great lengths to keep East Villagers safe. The next time you see one of them, say "Thank you! Thank you Mr. Sanitation Department worker, for keeping us all safe! In the East Village Today!"

The East Village in the Cold

People sometimes ask me, they say "Hey, East Village Today, what does the East Village look like when it's really cold out?"

So here are some pictures that I took this morning, when the temperature was 2 degrees!

This is East 3rd Street at Avenue B:

It's so cold, there was ice on the ground!

The local New York Sports Club on Avenue A is darker, but just as cold:

Glacier on First Avenue

There was some serious glacier action happening on First Avenue and East 2nd Street last night and today. This is a picture of the glacier last night:

I went back over this morning, to see if the glacier had moved, or melted. Instead, this is what I saw:

Glacier with salt.

Someone dumped a massive amount of salt on it!

It's a winter wonderland… in the East Village!
