Well, I got a response today! Here it is:
Dear East Village Today,
Thank you for your correspondence regarding the ice at the corner of First Avenue and East 2nd Street in the East Village of New York City, and your request: 1) that this ice be designated a glacier; and 2) that this glacier be named the "East Village Today Glacier".
We sent a team of investigators to survey the site, and we regret to inform you that due to the effects of warming, the ice has melted. As a result, we could not make the determination that this ice qualified as a glacier, and therefore, we cannot give it a name.
Sincerely,
United States Geological Survey
Here is a picture of where the glacier used to be:

Maybe it's better that we don't have a glacier in the East Village, as cool as it might sound. I guess I'll have to find some other way to memorialize myself!

weird - not only is there no ice, no glacier, but there is no melt water. it's all gone! where'd it go?
ReplyDeletep.s. do you think that the nyc landmarks commission could put up a plaque commemorating the site of the former 'glass-ee-er'?
I-)
It's the mystery of the water cycle!
DeleteAnd yes, a brown street sign called "Former East Village Today Glacier Street" would be nice!
