Artist's Booted Car

When you think of East Village artists, you usually think of artists living in hovels, creating great works of art on an empty stomach.

You don't usually think about their car being booted by the City. And yet, that too is a part of the artist's life.

Behold, as seen on Avenue B this past Thursday:

Artist's booted car.

Here is a close-up of the notice:

Close-up of notice.

It's no longer a question of money for paint vs. drugs, today it's a question of money for paint vs. drugs vs. boot penalties!

Looks Like The Bad Old Days

In a lot of ways, the East Village still looks like it did back in the bad old days.

Take this scene, for instance, on East 7th Street and Second Avenue:

Big mess.

What a mess! A vacant lot, a full dumpster, trash beside the dumpster, trash beside the vacant lot, a dirty car…

The only thing missing is a freegan rummaging through it all!

Work Of Art Car

You can always tell an artist's car in the East Village — they're works of art themselves!

Behold, seen on East 7th Street:

Work of art car.

Of course, if you need confirmation, all you have to do is walk around to the other side:

The other side.

Your ego has no followers — not like East Village Today!

Baby In Car

I was walking across East 7th Street recently a couple of weeks ago, when I saw this sticker in the back window of this car:

Sticker in back window.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

What?! They left a baby in the car?!

They didn't even crack the windows!

Who Does This?

Who parks their car next to a jar of gross stuff?

Jar of gross stuff.

Here is a close-up:

What is that?!

Don't even tell me.

Weird Windshield

This sure is a curious phenomenon that I noticed, walking across East 3rd Street last month — there is more rain where the wiper blade travels across this windshield than there is where it misses!

Behold:

More rain, etc.

This may not have anything to do with being parked in the East Village, but it's on par with most of what happens here!

Car With Wonky License Plate Parked On Sidewalk

The first thing I noticed about this car, parked on the sidewalk on East 7th Street, was the wonky, out-of-place license plate:

Wonky and out-of-place.

Here is a side shot:

Side shot.

I guess the idea is to preserve the integrity of the BMW front-end, but when someone backs into it while parking, and bends the license plate into the metal, it will probably be worse!

These gizmos were not meant for people who park on the sidewalk!

Ti Amo

Snow always brings out the best in East Villagers, as can be seen in this picture taken across from the beloved Key Food on East 4th Street:

Ti amo yourself!

The good feelings did not diminish overnight, as can be seen by this picture taken Thursday morning, outside the beloved Fine Fare, on Avenue C:

Smiley face.

I wonder if these two cars being parked outside of grocery stores had anything to do with it?

Nah!

Displaced Bumper

Even though Blizzard Stella was a flop, that doesn't mean it passed through unnoticed!

Behold, outside the beloved Fine Fare, on East 4th Street:

Displaced bumper.

Here is a close-up:

Sometimes, all it takes is a regular old snowfall to make cars start shedding parts!

Red-Towel Bumper Guard

What's the first word that pops into your head when when you think of bumper guards?

"Ugly", right?!

Well, one clever East Villager has a solution to this ugliness problem, as seen recently on East 2nd Street:

Red-towel bumper guard.

It matches the color of the car!

Out of Control Shopping Cart

It looks like this teeny-tiny shopping cart went out of control on East 2nd Street, some days ago:

Crash!

Luckily, no one was hurt!

Teeny-Tiny Garage

I was walking across East Houston Street — oh, about fifteen days ago — when I noticed this extremely narrow building:

Extremely narrow building.

Why would such an extremely narrow building exist, I wondered, let alone have a door?

I was not to be left wondering for long! When I got to the other side, I found the answer:

The answer.

So the rear-door entrance is for loading the trunk, and the front entrance is for getting into the car and driving away.

I would have made it a bit wider, so the doors can open on both sides without hitting the walls. In a way, this is like parking in a public garage and having someone park too close to you!

Wagon & Car

I was walking up First Avenue this past Saturday, when I saw this repurposed wagon and car at the beloved sidewalk sale that's always there on East 2nd Street:

Wagon and car.

I wonder if they're for sale? Probably.

Everything has a price… in the East Village Today!

Roots Rock Hummus

I was walking down St. Mark's Place, oh, about sixteen days ago, when I saw this car in front of the beloved St. Dymphna's:

Roots: The microbrew of hummus.

I thought to myself: You could reverse that — Roots: The hummus of microbrew — and it would mean basically the same thing! Except about microbrew.

Then, five days ago, I passed by again, on the other side of the street, and there was the same car, so I took another picture and had the same idea, about microbrew and hummus.

Roots: The hummus of microbrew.

What's that supposed to mean — it's made in someone's basement?

Tiny Little Cars

I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Saturday when, in the distance, I saw a tiny little car.

I wanted to get a picture of it, but this woman was standing in front of it. I would have asked her to move, but she was talking on the phone, and I didn't want to interrupt her!

Just then, I noticed that the car was very reflecty, and it was reflecting her image, so I took the picture:

Reflecting her image.

These tiny little cars are called "smart cars", but they don't look very safe — you could probably sneeze and knock it over.

How smart is that?!

The Day After

The day after the blustery day, everything is back to normal on East 10th Street. Everything is back in its place, except…

…the tree is gone:

The tree is gone.

…and the fender is damaged:

The fender is damaged.

…and the kickstand is bent, requiring assistance now from a rock:

The kickstand is bent.

You might think it's weird that the same cars are in the same place,
but — alternate-side parking is suspended on Wednesdays… in the East Village Today!

Dirty Car Ticket

East Villagers might like litter, they might even like graffiti, but there's one thing they don't like, and that's a dirty automobile!

I was walking up Second Avenue this past Saturday morning, when I saw Officer Friendly giving a ticket to this dirty car, parked in front of the beloved Himalayan Visions:

Ticket for excessive dirtiness.

His shirt matches the color of the paint — that's what caught my eye!

The Jaguar

I was walking across East 6th Street last week, when I passed by this Jaguar (JAG-you-are, in England):

Open-hooded Jaguar.

That hood shouldn't be open, I thought to myself. Probably the result of a non-victimless crime!

I looked into the interior and saw the front seat forward, but it didn't seem to be related:

Front seat forward.

I  went back to the front of the car, and that's when it hit me: something hit this car:

Hit car.

Or this car hit something — one way or another, the principle that no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time was upheld!

East Villagers love the maintenance of physical laws!

For a Reason

Some people say that everything happens for a reason. I'd like to think that's why this yellow car on East 4th Street parked beside this yellow CityRack: for a reason!

Yellow for a reason.

It's always something reasonable… in the East Village Today!

Another Wrecked Car

I was walking down East 4th Street a couple of weeks ago, when I saw this wrecked car:

Wrecked car.

I took a picture of it (since that's what I do!), but I couldn't think of anything to say about, outside of the obvious, that's it's wrecked!

But after posting the picture yesterday, of the demolished car on The Bowery, I saw this one, and now I have something to say about it: Look! Another wrecked car… in the East Village Today!

What's going on these days?!
