Reserved Parking

Most East Villagers don't own a car. Why would they? Who wants to drive around looking for a parking spot on the street the night before Alternate-Side Parking?

However, some of the residents of the Jacob Riis Houses on Avenue D have their own personal parking spaces, as part of the contract amenities for the community brought by the Avenue D Pump Station!

This is the view of the parking lot, looking towards East 13th Street:

Here are the barricades that reserve the parking spot for its designated tenant:

They sure are rusty — I would paint mine!

The Day After

The day after the blustery day, everything is back to normal on East 10th Street. Everything is back in its place, except…

…the tree is gone:

…and the fender is damaged:

…and the kickstand is bent, requiring assistance now from a rock:

You might think it's weird that the same cars are in the same place,
but — alternate-side parking is suspended on Wednesdays… in the East Village Today!

Cool Old Pickup Truck Ready to Sprout Roots?

Sources tell me that alternate-side parking has been cancelled in the east Village for Tuesday, February 3. Right away, East Villagers are wondering: when will the cool, old pickup truck move back to East 9th Street?

As you know, it is currently parked on St. Mark's Place, outside Fun City:

Parked on St. Mark's Place.

If you take a look at that parking sign, you'll see that there's no parking there from 9:00–10:30am on Tuesdays and Fridays:

A Tuesday spot.

That means it would have to be moved by 9:00am tomorrow, under normal circumstances — with alternate-side parking cancelled, it won't have to move now until Friday!

I hope it doesn't sprout roots!

Alternate-Side Parking

This past Sunday, while on my picture-taking mission around the East Village, I happened onto this alternate take on alternate-side parking, on East 10th Street:

Alternate-side parking.

I probably should have taken a picture of the license plates — not to shame of harass the owners of this vehicle, but to show that they were diplomatic plates.

Which means they won't be towed, and if a cop writes them a ticket, it won't be paid, and the New York Post will publish another piece on diplomatic scofflaws as just another reason why the United Nations should be kicked out of New York City.

This is how the East Village is dragged into international affairs!
