Leaning Tree Guard

Just like the tree supports on East 7th Street, this tree guard on East 5th Street is pointless:

Pointless tree guard.

As the tree is bent, so grows the tree guard!

Another Freaky Tree

Whenever anyone thinks of the East Village, right after God and the flag, they think of freaky trees!

This one is growing sideways on St. Mark's Place:

Growing sideways.

The branches do what they can to correct things, growing perpendicular to the trunk, but with little success:

Little success.

It reminds me of a poem I learned as a child:
I think that I shall never see
a poem as freaky as an East Village tree!

Another Leany Tree

There's not a whole lot to say about this leany tree on St. Mark's Place — it's on St. Mark's Place, and it leans:

Leany tree.

These things seem to all lean toward the street. That's probably a good thing — its probably worse to lean toward the buildings!

Another Crooked Tree

The East Village is famous for its deformed and falling-down trees.

Here is one such tree, of the falling-down variety, on East 7th Street:

Falling-down tree.

Some day in the not-so-distant future, it will crash down on everything in its path.

East Villagers love their rescue trees!

Doomed Tree

Over on the Avenue B side of Tompkins Square Park, in an area where no one goes, grows a tree that is doomed:

Doomed tree.

Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

You can see in the first picture that this tree is surrounded by other, much larger trees, that completely overshadow it.

In its effort to find sunlight, the doomed tree grows sideways, and has already reached the point where it needs to be supported by a splint. Assuming it's able to draw nutrients out of soil already depleted by the large trees, how long can it grow in this direction before its weight causes it to collapse?

Doomed… in the East Village Today!
