More Pumpkins

Speaking of pumpkins, here is a picture of some pumpkins above the beloved Hot Pot Centeral on Second Avenue, back in late October:

Some pumpkins.

Here is a close-up:

Most people didn't see them, since there were so high up.

East Village Today saw them though!

The Hardy Pumpkins

I was walking across East 4th Street one morning back in December — December 13, to be precise! — when I saw these hardy pumpkins on the sidewalk:

Hardy pumpkins.

I was very surprised to see them in such good condition, this long after Halloween. I was even more surprised to see that some anarchist hadn't destroyed them!

The next day, it snowed! There they were, unsmashed:

Unsmashed.

It could not last forever — it could not last beyond December 19, in fact! The combined influences of decomposition and the anarchist's boot worked their wiles on them:

Worked wiles.

They had a good run though, and there's no victory in smashing a pumpkin 49 days after Halloween — it's practically humiliating!

Pumpkin In The Park

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park last week, when I saw this pumpkin plant growing behind the fence surrounding the center, grassy area:

You know what that means — Halloween is right around the corner!

Big-Ass Pumpkin

While walking down Avenue B this past week, I couldn't help but notice this big-ass pumpkin sitting outside the beloved SOS Chefs:

Big-ass pumpkin.

There's no telling why SOS Chefs has such a big-ass pumpkin, outside of the fact that there's only eight more days until Halloween!

They even have a matching bicycle! (Hint: it's orange!)

The World is a Vampire

No, East Village Today isn't going goth — I just needed a clever way to introduce this smashing pumpkins story!

This past Sunday, at the 11th Street Community Garden, on East 11th Street, there was a pumpkin smashing festival!

It turned out to be more of a pumpkin chopping festival than a pumpkin smashing festival, but a few people brought their jack-o-lanterns and chopped them up in a bucket!

Chop them pumpkins.

Here is a close-up:

I wonder if these two made it into the mix?

Too Much Too Soon

East Villagers love Halloween! It's the start of the holiday season that doesn't end until New Year's!

And while it's probably true that it's never too soon to start decorating, people should remember that perishable decorations should be used sparingly until, oh, about October 24!

Witness the result of… too much, too soon:

Too much, too soon.

Then again, these prematurely-decayed pumpkins were on St. Mark's Place — they could be an art project!

When life gives you pumpkins, make a sculpture — in the East Village Today!
