The Last Three

As part of my series of Day Trips Outside the East Village, I ventured this morning to Astor Place, to see the new rhino sculpture called "The Last Three", by the artist duo Gillie and Marc.

East Villagers have been flocking to this sculpture since it was unveiled yesterday — there hasn't been this much excitement since Basquiat was alive!

There are parts of the East Village where you can still see remnants of the days when any two objects welded together were a sculpture.

The First Snowfall of 2017

East Villagers were excited to wake up this morning to the first snowfall of 2017!

The Sculptor of St. Mark's Place

Back in June, I posted a picture of a tiny ceramic head on a rail that I saw on St. Mark's Place.

Today, I passed by this location again and per chance saw what I'd say has never been seen before — the door was open:

Naturally, I had to have a picture of that! But what happened next almost stopped my in my tracks — inside this open door was a sculpture studio, with the sculptor himself busy at work:

Too Much Too Soon

East Villagers love Halloween! It's the start of the holiday season that doesn't end until New Year's!

And while it's probably true that it's never too soon to start decorating, people should remember that perishable decorations should be used sparingly until, oh, about October 24!

I was walking down St. Mark's Place yesterday, when I saw this head on a rail:

It's almost enough to distract you from the flower boxes and collapsing cellar doors surrounding it!

Sculpture Corner

As everyone knows, the East Village is full of artists. They're everywhere, and so is their handiwork!

The Avenue B and East 10th Street corner of Tompkins Square Park frequently, if not always, has some type of cool metal sculpture at it.

I passed by yesterday and saw this:

Second Avenue Art Project

It's possible that not everything you see in the East Village is an art project, but it's darn hard to tell what isn't!

I was walking around Second Avenue yesterday, when I saw this:

How else could you describe two pieces of wood lashed to a lamppost, with a single nail attached? There's a message here, waiting to be deciphered!

What is it saying? What is the artist trying to tell us? Maybe it's a statement about rebuilding, after the fire.

Cool Arty-Things

Sometimes in the East Village, you see arty things together that catch your eye, either because they're different, or because they're similar.

In this example, on East 3rd Street, they're similar:

Bicycle Sculpture Update

Two days ago, I wrote about a cool bicycle sculpture I found on East 4th Street. The last picture I took was of it leaning against a school building. I wanted a better background than dirt, and I also wanted people to see it, so they could take and maybe display it to the public.

Well, yesterday, this is what I saw at Don Juan's Barber Shop, on East 4th Street by Avenue C:

Don Juan and his friends are all big bicycling enthusiasts — they oftentimes have many bicycles parked in front — so it makes sense that they would hang it like this!

Art Over There

On the other side of the Third Avenue border of the East Village, at St. Mark's Place, there is a new sculpture by an artist named Keith Haring (1958–1990):

Window Junk Sculpture

Anything can be art in the East Village. All you have to do is say it is!

This mini-sculpture sits in the air conditioner bay of a window guard, on Second Avenue:
