Second-Cutest Block

East 9th Street has for a long time been considered the cutest block in the East Village.

And why not? It's so cute!

Recently, East 7th Street has been getting into the act, stringing up lights over the sidewalk, the way East 9th Street does.

Behold:

Strung-up lights.

Trash & Vaudeville is getting into the picture too!

Into the picture.

Even the punks are cute these days!

Without Cars

What if there were no people and no cars in the East Village — what would that look like?

I think it would look a lot like East 7th Street did last Sunday afternoon:

The beloved Rose and Basil, without cars in front of it.

The blue place, the beloved junk store, and the beloved Comparti,
without cars in front of them.

The beloved Trash & Vaudeville, without cars in front of it.

If you're wondering why there were no cars, it was because of signs like this:

No Parking Sunday.

It would be great if each block had its own No Parking Sunday, so I could take pictures of the buildings I can't otherwise!

Storewide Sale

I was walking across East 7th Street, when I saw this sign in the window of the beloved Trash & Vaudeville:

Thanksgiving Day Sale sign.

If you're in the market for some warm pleatherette (in the window), or maybe a Nancy Spungen t-shirt, you can save 30%!

Nothing screams "East Villager" like saving money on punk-rock fashions!

Post-No-Bills Frenzy

Someone went nuts with the "Post No Bills" stencil, on the construction fence in front of the former St. Mark's Place location of the beloved Trash & Vaudeville:

Nuts.

That's one way to defeat those pesky bill posters — there's no room to post a bill now!

The Final Days of Trash & Vaudeville?

Late Summer is the time for taking a look at the state of some of the stores that East Villagers belove so much.

One such store is the beloved Trash & Vaudeville, on East 7th Street:

Trash & Vaudeville.

I can't bring myself to go inside this store. Whenever I pass by, they are empty, and I don't want to raise hopes that I'm going to buy something, when I only want to take pictures of the empty store.

I predict that very soon this store will close, and since most of the merchandise will be shipped off to sunny San Diego to be sold online, the only thing available for the Going Out of Business Sale will be what no one wants, like when St. Mark's Bookshop closed.

Of course, they could expand their inventory to include newer fashions!

Trash & Vaudeville Moves Again

East Villagers who follow the beloved Trash & Vaudeville on Twitter will certainly have noticed their Memorial Day Sale tweet:

***
***

Two things to note: 1) This sale is through their web site only; and 2) This tweet was posted from sunny San Diego, California!

It would appear that the beloved Trash & Vaudeville has moved again!

Mene Mene Tekel Parsin

What is the difference between the old St. Mark's Place location of Trash & Vaudeville and the new East 7th Street location?

Unfortunately for them, nothing!

Here are some pictures from yesterday afternoon:

Old St. Mark's Place location.

New East 7th Street location.

No one is coming and going, or hanging out in front of either!

Compare that to pictures from before the move:

People coming and going.

People hanging out.

Finally, compare that to a picture from 1635:

Translated, this reads: "Sell more Taylor Swift t-shirts!"

Yes, that final character is an exclamation point.

Trash & Vaudeville Grand Re-Opening

It's back! After 19 excruciating days with nowhere to purchase 1970s-era punk-rock clothing in the East Village, the beloved Trash & Vaudeville is open for business at their new location on East 7th Street:

Trash & Vaudeville on East 7th Street.

I stopped by just before their announced re-opening time of 11:30 a.m., to see if a crowd was waiting outside, but there wasn't — East Villagers aren't out of bed at this hour!

The manager of the store was there, posing for the paparazzi:

Posing for the paparazzi.

Moments later, it was just another day in the East Village — it was as if they had always been there:

Just another day.

East Villagers had been hoping against hope that this new location would not have the treacherous stairs that the last location had, but to no avail. These stairs look to be potentially worse:

Potentially worse.

In closing, East Villagers didn't know it at the time, but when the beloved St. Mark's Bookshop moved from their location on the north side of St. Mark's Place, across the street to the south side, it was the beginning of the end for them.

Let's hope this move doesn't portend the same for Trash & Vaudeville — they don't even carry Sid Vicious t-shirts on their web site!

Trash In Transit

As you may recall from my post Duelling Photographers, I was on St. Mark's Place this past weekend.

While any reason is a good reason to be on St. Mark's Place, mine was to see what was going on inside the former location of the beloved Trash & Vaudeville!

Behold, if you will:

Inside Trash & Vaudeville.

East Villagers can't wait till Trash & Vaudeville reopens in their new location, and they're able to buy Sid Vicious t-shirts again!

T + 8 days and counting!

…In With The New

As I wrote about a minute ago, the new East 7th Street location of the beloved Trash & Vaudeville will be free from the stair hazard that plagued their St. Mark's Place location all those years!

No stair hazard.

There are still stairs, but not the sort that make people fall and bash their shin!

They've already started preparing for their Grand Re-Opening, by painting their riot gates pink!

Pink riot gates.

As East Villagers all know, black and pink is the most fashionable of the 1980s color combinations, only slightly more fashionable than black and cyan, or leopard-skin!

Some things never go out of style… in the East Village Today!

Out With The Old…

As I wrote before, the beloved Trash & Vaudeville is moving to East 7th Street!

East Villagers are excited as all get out to be able to purchase their 1980s rock-and-roll clothes at a new location, one without the dangerous stairs that existed at the St. Mark's Place location!

Dangerous stairs leading up.

Here's another view:

Another view.

These were the stairs leading to the sidewalk from the downstairs area:

Dangerous stairs leading to the sidewalk.

They even painted a warning on them:

Watch Your Step.

Check out how the kids wearing Dr. Martens boots assemble on one side, leaving the sneaker-wearer isolated!

Goodbye To Trash & Vaudeville

I was walking across St. Mark's Place yesterday, when I saw a gaggle of shoppers outside the beloved Trash & Vaudeville, which made me think to myself: "Hey, East Village Today, isn't this the last day Trash & Vaudeville is open at this location?"

"Why yes, it is!" I responded, and I went inside to take some fare-thee-well pictures.

I haven't been inside Trash & Vaudeville since the mid-1980s, and let me tell you this: It hasn't changed a bit!

Behold, upstairs:

Upstairs/front.

Upstairs/back.

The sign on the back wall reads: Rock and Roll Kids Clothes — aren't these all kids clothes?!

Speaking of kids, a couple of teenagers were with their father, when one pointed to the t-shirt wall and said: "It's your shirt!"

Somewhere, a t-shirt printer has never changed the plates on his silkscreening machine.

Next stop, downstairs:

Downstairs/front.

Downstairs/back.

Do you know how Dr. Martens boots became so popular? The sound man at CBGB was being bitten on his ankles by fleas, so he went to an Army/Navy store and bought a pair of black boots. True fact!

A fun time was had by all, while The Stooges's "No Fun" blared from the speakers!

East Villagers can hardly wait for Trash & Vaudeville to re-open in their new location — maybe they'll sell newer clothes!

Trash & Vaudeville Moves East

The day is drawing near when the beloved Trash & Vaudeville will move from their current location, on the very cool St. Mark's Place, to their new location, on the very cool East 7th Street!

Here is the sign in their window, alerting people of the impending move:

Alerting the people.

"Hey Ho, Let's Go" is from a song by a band called The Ramones, that was very popular in the 80s. Trash & Vaudeville is itself very popular with the older, 80s-retro crowd.

Here is a Google® map showing how to get from where they are now to where they will be:

From here to there.

The dotted blue line makes the most sense to follow, because you get to stay on St. Mark's Place the longest! The gray line that runs across East 7th Street is second-best — you can stop by the beloved McSorley's Old Ale House on the way, and get a half dozen or so of their tiny beers! The gray line that runs across East 6th Street makes no sense at all, except that many people who shop at Trash & Vaudeville are high on drugs, and will go that way!

Finally, you'll be less than a block from Tompkins Square Park, where you can go to show off your new (old) fashions!

Whose fashionable park? Our fashionable park!

Trash (and Vaudeville)

I was walking down Third Avenue last night, when I saw a young woman deposit Trash in the trash can. A shopping bag from the beloved Trash and Vaudeville, to be more precise!

Trash (and Vaudeville) in the trash.

For those who don't know, the beloved Trash and Vaudeville is the coolest store on the coolest block in all the East Village — everyone who lives here buys their clothes from this store!

Unrelated to this, sources tell me that the beloved Trash and Vaudeville is moving… to East 7th Street! St. Mark's Place coolness is bursting at the seams — the coolest street is about to become the coolest two streets!

It's almost too much to comprehend… in the East Village Today!

(By the way, do you notice the similarity between the beloved Trash and Vaudeville's color, and East Village Today's? Birds of a feather…)

Trash & Vaudeville

There is really only one place to go for clothes in the East Village, and that's Trash & Vaudeville, on St. Mark's Place, just in from Third Avenue.

Trash & Vaudeville.

This store has been around for over thirty years!

They're not cheap, but when you dress from here, you are the East Village! There's no wondering if you're going to look the part. They even have Dr. Martens for babies! How cool is that?!
