Teeny Tiny Dumpster

I was walking across East 4th Street recently, seeing if there was any activity in the dumping ground that has formed outside the beloved El Jardin del Paraiso, when I saw… a teeny tiny dumpster!

Teeny tiny dumpster.

It's so cute! It's like a tiny little baby dumpster, for tiny little baby garbage!

Maybe if someone hangs a No Dumping sign on the side of it, people will start putting their trash there, instead of on the sidewalk!

Great Opening

If you've been wondering whether the beloved Choice Cleaner 7's move two doors north on Avenue B was a good move or not, your wondering days are over!

It wasn't a good move — it was a great move!

Great Opening!

If that sign were not enough, behold:

Balloons.

No doubt, some people will not be convinced, but alas, someone had to be consigned to the dustbin of history… in the rapidly-changing East Village Today!

Missing Cat Signs

I was walking down Second Avenue recently, when I came upon this assemblage of barrels outside the formerly-beloved Verizon Wireless store:

Assemblage of barrels.

What could be stored in them, I wondered? Toxic chemicals? Radioactive waste? Sand?

Since East Village Today is renown for pictures of the insides of stores that were once beloved but are now closed, I went to get an inside picture.

But what's this?!

Missing Cat sign.

The Missing Cat sign — taped up from the inside!

Making my way down Second Avenue, I remembered a request from a commenter, that I post another picture of the formerly-beloved DF Mavens. Since I was so close, I decided to honor that request.

But what's this?!

Two Missing Cat signs.

Not one, but two Missing Cat signs!

East Villagers sure hope this cat is found!

DF Mavens Used to Be Here

I was walking up Second Avenue, oh… some time ago, when I noticed something I hadn't noticed before: the beloved DF Mavens was closed:

DF Mavens closed.

East Villagers love when stores leave behind their signs — without them, it's nearly impossible to remember what was there before!

Jolly Roger Missing

Ever since about this time last year, East Villagers have been accustomed to seeing two things together: the Jolly Roger flag that flew outside the middle window of this building on Second Avenue, and a blue plastic tarp covering the area beneath the windows.

So it came as a great surprise recently when both went missing, and a blue lantern mysteriously appeared in their place:

Both missing.

Naturally, the U.S.A. flag is still there — East Villagers are very patriotic! Even pirates skedaddling in the middle of the night doesn't change that!

Return of the Missing Cat Sign

March 26th was the one-year anniversary of the East Village Explosion.

Early that morning, I saw this gent videotaping the empty lot:

Videotaping the empty lot.

Interesting note: the signs hung on the fence paying tribute to the two who died here stop at the property line:

Signs stop at property line.

Even stranger is that signs for a missing cat have re-appeared:

Keeping hope alive… in the East Village Today!

A Special Treat

Last night, I was walking down Second Avenue. Just as I passed by the beloved Saint Mark's Church-In-The-Bowery, the bells began to chime!

Fortunately, I was quick with my camera. So here, as a special treat to East Village Today readers, are the chiming bells of Saint Mark's Church-In-The-Bowery:

Chiming bells.

You're welcome.

A New Tea House to Love

I was walking across East 2nd Street this morning, when I passed by the beloved TLC Tea House, celebrating its Grand Opening:

Grand Opening.

This stretch of real estate has not done well in the past few years, maybe longer than that! If the beloved Guaco Taco couldn't make it here, something's got to be wrong. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get a taco," they say, "Heck no, I don't like no tacos."? Tacos are delicious! Tacos gotta be the most delicious thing on the whole darn planet!

But maybe the Tender Loving Care Tea House will turn that around — East Villagers do love tea!

Freeze Warning

It was cold in the East Village yesterday!

How cold was it, you ask? It was so cold, the National Weather Service issued a Freeze Warning:

Freeze Warning.

East Villagers take their Freeze Warnings seriously — by the looks of it, the manager of the beloved Bueno East Mart on Avenue A told his employees to bring in the plants:

As-yet-un-brought-in plants.

I hope those $12 gardenia plants are frost-proof! Frost Proof Gardenias are unaffected by cold snaps and thrive on neglect — they're the perfect plant… for the East Village Today!

Diagonal Parking

I was walking across East 2nd Street the other morning, on my way to the Second Avenue F Train station at First Avenue, when I saw, as I have so many times before, this line of cars parked diagonally:

Cars parked diagonally.

This is one of the few places where you can park diagonally… in the East Village Today!
