Baby Christmas Trees

Whereas today is the sixth day of Christmas, the day of six geese a-laying, it is unlikely you will be able to purchase one of these baby Christmas trees, previously sold outside the beloved Village Farm Grocery, on Second Avenue:

Baby Christmas trees.

These are the sort of trees you buy, don't decorate, then throw away the day after Christmas, along with the stand, as can be seen in this picture, taken the day after Christmas, on the corner of Avenue B and East 7th Street:

Throw-away baby Christmas tree.

I'm not sure if the chair is from the same apartment or not. Probably, since anyone who throws away a perfectly good Christmas tree stand would probably throw away a perfectly good chair just because a wheel fell off!

Last Of The Discarded Christmas Trees

Here are the last of my pictures of discarded Christmas Trees.

This one, in Tompkins Square Park, was abandoned a week before Christmas!

December 19.

These two look like twins! (January 16, East 7th Street)

Twins.

This one shed all its needles. (January 17, East 7th Street)

No more needles.

This one too! (January 23, Avenue C)

This one too.

That is all.

Disposable Suitcases

I was walking up Avenue B recently, when I saw these two suitcases beside this trash can:

Two weekend bags.

All I could think was that whoever just moved to the East Village declared, upon arrival:

"I have arrived"!

Why else throw away perfectly-good suitcases, unless you know you'll never need them again?

Where did this new East Villager come from, you ask?

Texas.

Texas!

Better not mess with this woman!

So, on my way I walked, across East 7th Street, where I saw this:

Another discarded suitcase.

Another discarded suitcase! (And a discarded Christmas Tree!)

Where is this person from, you ask?

Texas.

Texas!

Maybe.

When did suitcases become disposable?

Ditch It Anywhere

In the East Village, there are three ways to discard your used Christmas Tree:

1. Put it on the curb in front of your building, for the sanitation workers to haul away;

2. Drag it over to Tompkins Square Park and throw it onto the pile at the southern end of the park; or

3. Ditch it anywhere. That's what happened here:

Ditched anywhere.

In this case, "anywhere" is the corner of Avenue B and East 4th Street!

Fake Holiday Sale

What was billed as a Holiday Sale turned out to be more than that — it was a Going Out Of Business Sale!

Behold, the formerly-beloved Koan, on East 7th Street:

Out of business.

Here is what it now looks like inside:

Inside.

They all look the same when empty, no? Grainy!

Did you notice that discarded Christmas tree in the first picture? Here is a close-up:

Close-up.

I think this tree is from 2016!

Christmas Tree Shaving

There's a new fad in the East Village: Christmas Tree Shaving!

Here is the first example I saw, on East 5th street:

First example.

You can see the trunks of both trees were shaved. It's closer to a Festivus Pole than a Christmas Tree!

Festivus Pole.

Here is the second example, outside the beloved The Kati Roll Company on Second Avenue:

Second example.

What do they do with the branches?!

Bomb Cyclone – The Beginning

East Villagers woke up this morning to find that all the predictions of snow came true. They're calling this the Bomb Cyclone, and from these pictures, you can see why!

Here you can see a couple of discarded Christmas trees, blown violently down East 4th Street:

Blown violently.

The wind was so strong, it blew this table from its original location into Tompkins Square Park, at Avenue B and East 7th Street:

Blown table.

Because so many East Villagers come from the Midwest, where bomb cyclones don't even raise an eyebrow, they are undaunted! Here is a typical East Villager, sitting in the park, talking on his cell phone:

"Hey, guess what? It's snowing."

Finally, here is a video of another intrepid East Villager, riding his Citibike to work.

Neither rain nor snow now Bomb Cyclone… etc.!

Clever Discardation

Back in January, when it was time to discard Christmas trees on the curb, clever East Villagers did clever things with their trees.

Here is one example, seen on East 4th Street:

Clever.

In the grand performance art of life, all the East Village is a stage!

Bittersweet

As excieted as East Villagers were to wake up to snow, all around us now are reminders that the holiday time is over.

Starting with Halloween, moving through Thanksgiving, Santa Con, and New Year's, the East Village holiday season is finally coming to a close with the discarding of the Christmas trees.

Behold, on First Avenue:

Snow-covered, discarded Christmas trees.

Maybe these two on East 3rd Street have bedbugs?

Bedbuggy discarded Christmas trees.

Even owners of artificial trees get into the act!

Discarded artificial Christmas tree.

But fear not, Spring is already on its way — even today, I saw my first robin!

It's the circle of life… in the East Village Today!
