I was walking up Avenue A the other day — on Halloween, to be precise! — when I noticed a bright-yellowish sign on the door of the beloved Mamani Pizza, between East 9th and 10th Streets:

I was walking along Avenue A the other day, when I passed by this collection of signs affixed to a traffic-light control box, at the corner of East 9th Street:

Avenue C Abides
High on the list of every East Villager's list of favorite movies is The Big Lebowski. One line from that movie is repeated throughout: "The Dude abides"!
In much the same way, Avenue C abides!
Everyone already knows how much cooler Avenue C is than Avenue A. As if further proof was necessary, here are pictures of the Halloween festivities at La Plaza Cultural, a community garden at East 9th Street:

Avenue A vs. Avenue C
On average, the East Village is very cool. Very cool!
But an average express the central or typical value in a set of data — degrees of coolness, in this case — and is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number. In layman's terms it means some places in the East Village are cooler than others!
While taking pictures of the young'uns trick-or-treating along the mid-Avenue A corridor, I discovered that range of lesser-coolness! It is with no joy that I must report this to you.

To their credit, the beloved Ray's Candy Store not only did not decorate their front (thereby maintaining an already-scary appearance!), but delivered candy to the young'uns:
On Avenue C, however, restaurant and bar owners dressed up and went outside to greet the revellers!

The Work Continues
After the recent placement of the perimeter fence in front of Orchard Alley Community Garden, East 4th Streeters knew it wouldn't be long before the new fence itself would be in place!
Shortly after sunrise this morning [November 2], the crew were parking their trucks, collecting their picks and shovels, and off-loading their end-loaders! Then, once safely behind the perimeter fence, the work commenced!
After digging a furrow, the workers picked and shovelled:
You can see the bricks where the building that used to be here stood:
If you were thinking that it must be hard work to dig such a trench, with all these bricks in the way, you're right — but this trough wasn't dug by hand!

I was walking across St. Mark's Place last week, when I came upon this scene, outside the formerly-beloved Simone Martini Bar on First Avenue:
