How 'Bout You?

There are no pictures in this post — just a story. And a video!

I was walking across East 7th Street this past Friday evening, on my way home from work, when I heard an East Villager near me say:

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?

Could it be, I thought to myself? Is he singing "Free Bird", the most requested song in the history of song requests?

I listened closer.

For I must be traveling on, now
Cause there's too many places I've got to see.

He was! He was singing "Free Bird"!

East Villagers are free birds, themselves. Recently, the alpha hawk of Tompkins Square Park has been three-timing it with a couple of younger hawks. You could say he's a free bird too!

Bird Watching

One of the eccentricities East Villagers are known for is bird watching. Walk through Tompkins Square Park any time of the day, and you're likely to see scenes like these:

Before I was limited to using my iPhone to take pictures, I might have had a close-up — but I don't!

I was walking across East 4th Street the other day, when I saw this:

Cigarette Butts

East Villagers love to smoke cigarettes, and they love to throw the butts on the sidewalk when they finish!

There were so many cigarette butts on the Second Avenue this past Sunday, that I almost didn't see this bird, eating a cupcake:

Fortunately for the birds, there are many cupcake stores in the East Village — they probably even have their favorites!

Hopefully, they won't take up smoking!
