Labor Day LP

Walking down St. Mark's Place back in April, I spied with my little eye an abandoned cardboard box containing four long-playing records by East Village celebrity Spencer Breslin:

Long-playing records.

I wonder if he's related to Jimmy Breslin? I bet he is — it's not that common a name, Spencer.

A month later, I saw this, on East 7th Street:

On East 7th Street.

Here is a close-up:

I wonder if these are the same records? Maybe someone took them from the box on St. Mark's Place, walked a block, and left them here.

It's certainly a much better background!

TV Eye

I was riding my Citibike across East 6th Street recently, when I saw a news reporter from none other than Eyewitness News!

What had they witnessed, I wondered? I got off my Citibike to find out.

They were on the sidewalk in front of The Creative Little Garden, but the camera was facing away from it:

What was it aimed at?

The building across the street?

It was the building across the street — I was sure of it! I walked over to see what was so newsworthy.

I was not prepared for what I saw:

Apartments for rent.

East Villagers love apartments for rent!

Memorial Day Punk Rock Extravaganza

I was passing through Tompkins Square Park yesterday, when I happened upon this gathering:

A gathering in the park.

It turns out they had gathered for the "Memorial Day Punk Rock Extravaganza"!

This band was on stage when I arrived:

Punk rock band.

I don't know their name, but they were pretty good!

Of course, East Villagers don't dance:

They finished shortly after I got there, and "Rev. Jen" went on to read a chapter from her new book:

Introducing: Rev. Jen.

It was good too!

When she finished, another band went on:

Another punk rock band.

The crowd was rocked off their feet:

Literally!

The extravaganza was organized by East Village celebrities Chris Flash and Zoe Hansen:

I had the idea, while I watched the show, that punk rock extravaganzas are very much like Historic Richmond Town, on Staten Island: the performers are good at what they do, and they serve a useful purpose, in reminding people of a time long past.

I say: Two, three, many Punk Rock Extravaganzas… in the East Village Today!

East Village Celebrities

With all the attention that's focussed on TV celebrities shooting in the East Village, it's sometimes easy to forget that the East Village has its own celebrities!

Chris Flash, for example:

Chris Flash is the editor of a popular newspaper called The Shadow: "New York City's only underground newspaper"!

This was taken on Friday, as the May Day demonstration made its way down Second Avenue.
