It's Spreading

Sometimes people say to me, they say: "Hey East Village Today, is hollow tree fungus really as prevalent as you say it is?"

And I reply to them: "It's worse than that!"

I took this picture back in mid-August, on East 7th Street:

It's spreading at an alarming rate — some day it may be too late to stop it… in the East Village Today!

Doomed

In my effort to help remove everything unsafe from the East Village (except for those things that make it so cool!) I have followed the growth of the hollow tree fungus on this tree on Avenue C:

People have diligently curbed their dogs, but it doesn't seem to have stemmed the growth of this, dare I say, hideous fungus from outer space!

Just this past weekend, it sprouted a feather!

Hollow Tree Fungus Alert — Update

Back in July, I wrote about a tree on Avenue C suffering from hollow-tree fungus.

I passed by there recently, and saw this:

Curb your hollow-tree fungus.

It sort of looks like matzos!

Also, someone replaced the previous "Curb Your Dog" sign with two new ones!

It's never too late to curb your dog… in the East Village Today!

Hollow Tree Fungus Alert

There is a serious situation developing in the East Village today: hollow tree fungus!

Behold:

Shelf fungi, also known as fungal conks, grow on decaying and hollow trees. The presence of these mushrooms indicates that the tree has a disease and is rotting on the inside. The diseases can lead to severe damage in just a few months. As the tree’s internal decay increases, more mushrooms appear on the bark.

Unfortunately, I don't remember where this is, but I can tell you I took the picture ten days ago, so this tree is ten days closer to falling down than it was then!

So many sick and fungus-y trees… in the East Village Today!
