Abandoned Books

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park this past weekend, when I noticed something that looked like abandoned books, at the base of the pee tree:

It seems someone abandoned four copies of KRSNA, with dots beneath the R and the S and the N.

If you didn't get yours quickly, it's too late now — by this time, they'll all have been pee'd on!

Pee Tree

The wonderful thing about the East Village is that so many cool things can be happening, at the same place and at the same time!

For instance, not everyone who came to Tompkins Square Park this past Sunday came to bang their heads together — these two fellows came to admire the "pee tree":

This "pee tree" is pee'd on by dogs; the previous "pee tree" was pee'd on by kids.

You might say the East Village is a petri dish… of pee trees!

The Pee Tree

I don't know how many people know this, but there was a time when this tree was known as the "pee tree".

The former pee tree.

This is where pre-school-aged boys peed when they were in the Tompkins Square Park playground. Their parents would take them to the back side (the side closer in the picture).

These days, a fence prevents anyone from getting to it.

Alas, gentrification!
