Disposable Suitcases

I was walking up Avenue B recently, when I saw these two suitcases beside this trash can:

Two weekend bags.

All I could think was that whoever just moved to the East Village declared, upon arrival:

"I have arrived"!

Why else throw away perfectly-good suitcases, unless you know you'll never need them again?

Where did this new East Villager come from, you ask?

Texas.

Texas!

Better not mess with this woman!

So, on my way I walked, across East 7th Street, where I saw this:

Another discarded suitcase.

Another discarded suitcase! (And a discarded Christmas Tree!)

Where is this person from, you ask?

Texas.

Texas!

Maybe.

When did suitcases become disposable?

Intimations of the East Village

I was walking across St. Mark's Place this past Sunday, when I saw this suitcase on the sidewalk:

Farewell, punk-rock suitcase.

You see suitcases on the curb all the time, but this particular one made me wonder: Does this discarded suitcase represent the discarded dream of becoming a famous punk rock musician?

Eventually, the harsh realities of the music business take their toll. Pierced skin is allowed to close, long sleeves are worn over the tattoos, and the punk-rock suitcase you moved to the East Village with… is put onto the curb.
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind
A chapter is closed, and a new one opens — what new adventures await… in the East Village Today?!
