Assalted

You might not think that the job of an East Village blogger is dangerous, but… Whoa mama! Is it ever!

Just this past weekend, I was assalted on Second Avenue!

I was walking down Second Avenue, when a salt truck went by, spewing salt. One of the chunks hit me on the shin!

Ow!

And look what happened to my boots:

Assalted boots.

These are new, too!

(They're Ecco. They're waterproof, lined with GoreTex — very nice! And… I got them on Amazon for only $170 — they're $250 at Macy's!)

Here's a picture of the stupid salt on Second Avenue:

Stupid salt.

At least drivers don't have to worry about icy streets, while I limp home to wash my boots!

Sad Candy Corn

What's the first thing you think of when you think of candy corn?
Halloween, right?!

And what's the first thing you do when you think of Halloween?
Smile!

So what's up with this sad candy corn on St. Mark's Place:

I'm sad that I'm on St. Mark's Place.

…and on East 4th Street:

I'm sad that I'm on East 4th Street.

If these candy corns could sing, their song might sound something like this:
Gloom, despair, and agony on me!
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery!
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!
Gloom, despair, and agony on me!
Smile, you candy corns!

Cut

I was walking down East 2nd Street recently, when I saw this neon-looking bit of writing:

Neon-looking.

This is site of the beloved Original Barber Shop, and newest place in the East Village for a haircut!

The painter left quite a mess on the sidewalk — I hope someone cleans that up!

Out of Control Shopping Cart

It looks like this teeny-tiny shopping cart went out of control on East 2nd Street, some days ago:

Crash!

Luckily, no one was hurt!

Clever Discardation

Back in January, when it was time to discard Christmas trees on the curb, clever East Villagers did clever things with their trees.

Here is one example, seen on East 4th Street:

Clever.

In the grand performance art of life, all the East Village is a stage!

Jumbo-Sized Sprinkles Bottle

Who in their life would have thought sprinkles could come in bottles larger than what you can use in one cookie-baking season?

Behold, as seen in the beloved Key Foods, on Avenue A and East 4th Street:

Jumbo-sized sprinkles bottle.

It is truly a thing of beauty.

Pink Cellar Entrance

As every East Villager knows, a little bit of paint makes everything nicer!

I'm not sure what color this cellar entrance was before, but being newly painted, it's certainly nicer now:

Nicer now.

Heres a close-up:

Close-up.

It's too bad they didn't see fit to remove the litter when they painted!

A few short steps down the block, I found these empty paint cans:

Empty paint cans.

None of them have pink dribblings on them, so these were not the cans discarded after painting the cellar entrance. These are from another paint job, where they ate pizza while they worked.

Every job is more fun with pizza!

Samo©III

If there's one thing you can say about the existence of an East Villager, it's lustrous!

Which is why this retro graffiti, that I saw inside a pay phone booth on Second Avenue and East 6th Street, is so odd:

Odd graffiti.

You know who lacks luster? People who don't know how to spell!

Free Shirt

If you keep your eyes open, the East Village is a treasure trove of found items!

Back in January, I saw this shirt propped up in the window of the local branch of Bank of America, on Second Avenue and East 4th Street:

Propped-up shirt.

"Free shirt!" I shouted, and I went to see what size it was.

That's when I noticed this:

Damaged goods.

It turned out not to be my size, and besides, East Villagers don't wear shirts that look like tablecloths!

Banana On A Fence

Long ago, I had a blog, and one of  the features of that blog was a series called "Banana Peels", which consisted of pictures of… you guessed it: banana peels!

I thought about that when walking across East 4th Street recently and spotted this banana on a fence:

Banana on a fence.

It's funny to think that this banana once grew on a tree in Central America, was picked, shipped to North America, and made its way to the East Village, only to be abandoned on this fence.

Ha!
