100 Avenue A Elevator

East Villagers are excited about the new building being built at 100 Avenue A!

Here is a video of the construction elevator going up, carrying supplies to the construction workers above:

Tree Leaning

East Villagers are accustomed to leaning trees in this neighborhood — it's not as common to see someone leaning against a tree!

I took this picture while walking through Tompkins Square Park, back in the middle of August:

Leaning against a tree.

My first though was that she was trying to absorb tree energy!

According to whacked-out-loony.com:
Trees [...] have excellent grounding energy. Their vibrations are slower, deeper and more concentrated compared to some other living things. [...] By coming into contact with a tree you will pick up these vibrations whether you are consciously aware of it or not. You begin to resonate with the tree’s energy and you become more centered and grounded.
Then again, maybe she was just scratching her back!

Motorcycle Down

I was walking up lower Avenue A earlier this week, when I saw this overturned motorcycle, at the intersection of East 5th Street:

It's a good thing it was covered — at least the paint won't be scratched!

The World is a Vampire

No, East Village Today isn't going goth — I just needed a clever way to introduce this smashing pumpkins story!

This past Sunday, at the 11th Street Community Garden, on East 11th Street, there was a pumpkin smashing festival!

It turned out to be more of a pumpkin chopping festival than a pumpkin smashing festival, but a few people brought their jack-o-lanterns and chopped them up in a bucket!

Chop them pumpkins.

Here is a close-up:

I wonder if these two made it into the mix?

Square Roots

I was walking up First Avenue this past weekend, when I saw this site, outside the beloved Black Seed Bagels:

Square roots.

Someone removed two the the bricks that used to be here, but left the third brick!

You have to wonder why those bricks were put there, so many years ago, when this tree was just a sapling, and why no one took them sooner!

What will the tree do, now that its supports have been removed? Will people trip over these protruding roots?

Many unanswered questions… in the East Village Today!

The Doctor Is In

East Villagers love the Peanuts comics strip — they grew up reading it!

So it came as no surprise this past Sunday, when an East Villager set up a "Free Advice" booth in Tompkins Square Park. The clincher is, in true East Village fashion, that the advice dispenser was… a puppet:

A puppet.

And, in true East Village fashion, people asked for advice!

East Villagers love anything that's free!

On Location in Tompkins Square Park

I was walking through Tompkins Square Park this past Sunday, when I saw this film crew preparing a shot beside the robot trash can:

Film crew preparing a shot.

It turns out they were not in fact preparing a shot, but taking apart the camera, in preparation for walking to another part of the park (the drumming is from a drummer, warming up for a "punk rock" concert):

Once they got to the other side of the park, they set up their camera again:

Setting up the camera again.

This was the scene that they were preparing to shoot:

It looks like a remake of "Sid and Nancy"!

East Villagers love movies about punk rockers!

Citibike Station Missing

East Villagers were in for a rude awakening when they woke up November 1 to find that not only were their clocks moved back one hour, but the Citibike station, lovingly known as Bike Station 5626.07, at the corner of Avenue A and East 7th Street, outside the beloved Yuca Bar, was missing:

Citibike station 5626.07, missing.

This story might have ended sadly-enough there, but yesterday, I, while biking from the beloved Porto Rico Importing Company to the beloved Key Food, forgot that this station was missing, and had to park at another station!

Badminton – Official Sport of the East Village

If you ask the average East Villager (is there really such a thing as an average East Villager?!) what his/her favorite sport is, the answer will be a resounding "Badminton"!

Here are some East Villagers playing badminton in Tompkins Square Park this past Sunday:

So, in my capacity as arbiter of coolness in the East Village, I designate badminton the Official Sport of the East Village!

Sidewalk Art

Wherever you go in the East Village, you're bound to happen upon a work of art — from murals to sculptures to breakfast paintings!

Here is one such example of a breakfast painting that I discovered on Avenue C and East 2nd Street:
