Paper Plate Art

If you're wondering what the Joe Strummer mural has to do with Valentine's Day, you're not alone!

It may be that the future is unwritten, but this paper plate art project involved a lot of writing:

Luckily, it rained, so most of the paper plates stuck to the sidewalk. Some of them blew away though — you can see some of them on the left, past the stairs.

Here are some close-ups of the paper plates that remained:

All Is Well

All is Well Outside the beloved Niagara bar on the corner of Avenue B and East 7th Street, Joe Strummer looks onto an East Villager, fashionably dressed in all-black.

Fashionably dressed.

Joe Strummer would approve… in the East Village Today!

Sleep-Overers Graffiti Joe Strummer Mural

East Villagers love street art — they also love graffiti! So what's better than a mural with graffiti on it?!

This is the beloved Joe Strummer mural on the wall of the beloved Niagara, on Avenue A and East 7th Street, graffiti'd Sunday night, August 9:

Here is a close-up of the graffiti:

My psychic-detective abilities tell me that a malcontented sleep-overer — and anarchist! — scrawled this. My psychic-detective abilities also tell me that this was not the result of being refused service!

Not good enough for A-in-a-circle… in the East Village Today!

Third Time's A Charm

– UPDATED 5/5 –

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a picture of the mural on the side of the Niagara bar, on East 7th Street at Avenue A, that had been graffitied  on.

This past week, the mural was painted again — of the three, this is the first one that actually looks like Joe Strummer!

Introducing: Joe Strummer.

If this one doesn't last, I think Joe Strummer should be abandoned. It could only mean that he has no connection to the people of the East Village today.

I suggest replacing him with Mumford & Sons! Their new album has a song called "Tompkins Square Park"! It's a cool song.

Mumford & Sons are the new East Villagers!

The Future is Written On

Back in September, I wrote about the Joe Strummer mural on East 7th Street at Avenue A. The original mural was ruined during building renovations, and a new one was painted.

East Villagers all agree that the painting doesn't look anything like Joe Strummer, but because they liked his music, they'd tell you they liked the mural too, even if they didn't.

Recently, someone wrote on the mural:

Respect aint free.

That should be "ain't", with an apostrophe!

If someone paints another tribute to old-timers here, I think it should be a man waving a cane, and the caption should be: "Get off my lawn!"

Joe Strummer Mural

Joe Strummer was a musician in a band called The Clash. This band was very popular in the East Village back in the old days — thirty years ago, or so. You couldn't really whistle any of their songs, but you could jerk your head up and down really fast to them!

The Clash was so popular in the East Village that more than one mural was painted of him:

I don't know why none of the other band members have murals.
