Bags of Leaves

I was walking along East 10th Street this morning, at the top of Tompkins Square Park, when I saw this large collection of bags of leaves:

Bags of leaves.

I think the Parks Department workers who rake these leaves should rake them into a huge pile, instead of putting them into these bags. Nothing says Fall like East Villagers jumping into a huge pile of leaves!

Bench Repaired

Back on approximately March 20, as I was passing through Tompkins Square Park, I saw that the Parks Department workers had replaced two boards in a bench at the Avenue B/East 7th Street entranceway:

Two boards replaced.

Who even knew that the two previous boards needed replacing? The Parks Department, that's who!

The next time you're passing through Tompkins Square Park, come check out their handiwork — you'll be glad you did!

Tompkins Square Park Coming Undone

Now that the snow is receding, the damage brought about by the snow and ice is becoming apparent! I saw this the other day, while walking through Tompkins Square Park:

Hexagonal paving stones missing.

Two of the hexagonal paving stones near the big ol' elm tree on the south side are displaced! One is beside the hole it left, attached to a slab of ice, but the other is nowhere to be found!

Parks Department workers have probably already repaired this, but East Villagers should be careful walking around in the coming days — there's no telling where the next hole will open up!

The Moving Gate

I was walking through Tompkins Square park yesterday, when I saw a gate, separated from the fence that surrounds the grassy area, frozen in the ice. Oh yes, and a snow yurt:

Piece of gate in the ice, and a snow yurt.

Moments before, an East Villager stood on the gate and held the branch (a very popular branch for holding!):

Holding the branch.

Passing through the park again today, I saw that the gate was moved towards the fence, where it now awaits Parks Department workers to put it back in place on Monday:

Name Change

While looking at the picture used in Groovy Arty People, two things occurred to me.

1) Now that the gimpy elm is gone, the Parks Department workers should take up the cobblestones that once surrounded it, and rebuild the circle to just surround the healthy elm.

Cobblestones encircling… nothing.

There's no sense in living in the past, right?

2) The name "bendy tree" isn't right. I'm going to call it the "gimpy elm" from now on, which is more descriptive, I think. It was an elm, after all!

One Bench At A Time

Passing through Tompkins Square Park this morning, I spied this scene:

Wet paint.

This is the only bench that had the sign and the caution tape. They were probably repairing some vandalism. They're always quick to the task of keeping the park clean and pleasant looking!

Next time you see a Parks Department worker, tell them "Good job!"
