Slow Demise of a Pumpkin

On November 4, a few short days after Halloween, I spied this deflated pumpkin inside a window grate:

Deflated pumpkin.

Well, yesterday, during the great Polar Vortex of 2014, I passed by this window again:

Seriously deflated pumpkin.

East Villagers don't like to tidy up — I wonder what the apartment looks like?!

Staring Out the Window

This is my last Polar Vortex picture, until the next one!

I was walking down Second Avenue, taking pictures of the Polar Vortex, when I passed the Stage Restaurant:

Praying before dinner.

Apparently, the Polar Vortex made its way inside the restaurant, since this patron chose to leave on his coat and hat and gloves!

It was a rough day, but the East Village pulled through!

Shadowy Figures in Doorways

The East Village is where shadowy figures stand in doorways. I took this picture this evening, on Second Avenue:

"You call this a Polar Vortex? Why, in my day…"

In the old days, they flipped a coin — today they post to Twitter!

Subway Riders vs. The Polar Vortex

The Polar Vortex is no match for these East Village subway riders, who brave all manner of weather conditions to get to work:

Entering the subway station.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor Polar Vortex stays these East Villagers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds!

Consolidated Edison Ready for Anything

These Consolidated Edison trucks were lined up along Avenue B in the East Village this morning, waiting for the call to repair any damage caused by the Polar Vortex:

Ready to move.

Luck favors the prepared!

Bus Riders vs. The Polar Vortex

The Polar Vortex was no match for the M15 bus, nor these intrepid bus riders, waiting at the Houston Street stop on First Avenue:

M15 bus arrives, during Polar Vortex.

It takes a lot more than adverse weather caused by climate change to stop these East Villagers!

Tree Leaves vs. The Polar Vortex

I decided to take a different path to the subway this morning, so I walked down Avenue C. This tree, on East 4th Street, lost all of its leaves in a single night, due do the cold:

Leafless tree.

It wasn't the only one I saw that this happened to, but it was the best example.

East Village trees are not immune to the leaf-shedding effects of the Polar Vortex!

Citibikers vs. The Polar Vortex

You know the expression "junebug vs. hurricane"? Well this is East Villagers vs. Polar Vortex — specifically, Citibikers!

On First Avenue this morning, the only bikers I saw were Citibikers:

Citibikers bear the cold.

It makes sense — if you pay for a year's usage, you want to get your money's worth!

East Villagers are very thrifty!
