The New Ugliest Building

Since the tidying up of what was once the ugliest building in the East Village, there are new contenders for that spot.

I think it's safe to say that this building, on First Avenue, is in the running!

You may remember that back in February, I wrote about this building being ticketed!

Here we are in April, and it happened again:

Ticketed again.

This time, they taped the ticket up — probably the last one… just blew away!

In case you can't read this, it says: "At T/P/O I did observe a large accumulation of matted napkins, newspaper(s), paper bag(s), piece(s) of paper…"

"… and all around ugliness!" I'm sure!

Am I Dreaming?

Sometimes in the East Village, so many good things happen that you think you're dreaming. Today was one of those days!

I was walking across St. Mark's Place tonight, having just parked my Citibike, when I saw…

Well, let me show you instead:

Amazing.

Is this not amazing?! Just eight days ago, this building was probably the second ugliest building in the East Village — now it's clean as a whistle!

It's as if the person responsible said "You know, East Village Today is right, we should make this place look nicer", and then they did it!

Already on St. Mark's Place, I would usually walk through Tompkins Square Park, to see what sort of activities were taking place, but without even being aware of it, I was drawn, pulled, summoned… to East 4th Street:

No words.

No words could describe the feeling I had when I saw that the ugliest building in the East Village was no longer ugly — a small tear formed in my eye.

At this point, a unicorn flew out of the sky and spoke to me: "Wake up, East Village Today, this is all a dreammmmm…"

Just kidding!

I'd like to think, in my own small way, I had everything to do with this!

The Ugliest Building

I think it is safe to say that this building on East 4th Street is probably the ugliest building in the East Village today:

The ugliest building.

Yesterday, I did observe a woman kick the front door open instead of using a key, which means either the lock is broken, so anyone can enter, or the door doesn't close properly, so anyone can enter!

Shortly after that, I did observe a child of about 14, carrying two grocery bags, ring a buzzer to gain entrance, which means at least one kid lives in this building with no properly-locking front door!

It was then that I did observe this:

If you observe closely, you will see that the building owner was cited for having cardboard boxes not flattened, and recyclables mixed with non-recyclables. Not for being an eyesore! Not for having so many trash cans on the sidewalk!
