Art Over There

On the other side of the Third Avenue border of the East Village, at St. Mark's Place, there is a new sculpture by an artist named Keith Haring (1958–1990):

Caryatids and A Flag

What is this flag painted on the wall of this building on St. Mark's Place? It looks like "222N", with fezzes above the middle two 2s.

This is a curious sign, on Second Avenue:

What is up with that tiny little A?

On a completely unrelated note, I think the second-floor is where the bookseller Harris <Something> sold books after he moved off the street. I don't think he lived on the street, he just sold books there.

I Can See My Reflection In It

I passed by Crif*Dogs again this past Sunday, only to find someone out spraying the sidewalk again:

The Width of a Bike Lane

I think I have made a discovery: the width of the bike lanes was determined by measuring the width of a garbage truck.

This picture was taken this past Sunday, on the corner of First Avenue and St. Mark's Place:

I expected an enthusiastic biker to pass the truck and scream something about bikes lanes being for bikers, but it didn't happen.

Bikers are very territorial… in the East Village!

East Village Yesterday

As luck would have it, I forgot my camera at work, so I couldn't take any pictures today. Fortunately, I have a few pictures left over from previous expeditions!

This is a building on St. Mark's Place, called Deutsch-Amerikanische Schützen Gesellschaft:

At the top, it says Einigkeit Macht Stark:

…which means Unity Makes Strength (or Strength in Unity, depending on how you translate it).

Get Your Fix

I was walking up Second Avenue yesterday, when I saw this card on the sidewalk:

Get your fix.

I don't know if you can tell, but there's a label on this syringe, and the words at the top read: Mother Earth.

I did a Google search for "Mother Earth" and "Get Your Fix", and found this:

GET YOUR FIX is a locations card which includes all current Juice Press stores. Sized as a business card, it easily fits into a wallet for those customers desiring an alternative to Google, Yelp, or even our very own Juice Press app to locate stores.

Only in the East Village could a hypodermic needle be used to advertise… anything!

Wither Lumé?

While walking up Avenue C yesterday, I spotted these stairs, leading into a bar (now out of business) called Lumé:

Inside the door was this chalkboard sign:

10% off for all locals.

How could a place like this close? It had all the right ingredients — dilapidated stairs, a discount for local residents — everything needed for success in the East Village!

Some mysteries are just not meant to be solved.

Drug Paraphernalia Store to Sell Liquor — Update

I passed by the 2nd Ave Smoke Shop on Second Avenue again yesterday, when I saw their door open. I took this opportunity to take another picture, one without the glare of shooting through a closed, glass door:

You might have noticed in the first post, a For Rent sign hanging there. I asked the guy inside if they were closing, and he said they were, at the end of December.

I guess the liquor license application will just expire.

Drug paraphernalia, newspapers, porn magazines, and candy are not a winning combination (on Second Avenue, in any case)… in the East Village!

Feeding the Pigeons Again

Just as I arrived at Tompkins Square Park today, a flock of pigeons flew out of this area and onto the roof of a building across the street, leaving their bread behind.

As you can see, the fake Parks Department sign is gone:

Lots of bread, no fake signs.

Maybe this is why they flew away:

Rodent eating bread.

Soon, his cousin joined him:

Two rodents eating bread.

The flora and fauna all survive as in the wild, in the wild East Village!
